That defensive group does look shocking. I guess it would be Clown, Micah, Sol, Cashley. Jesus.

id rather have lescott & sol in the middle & Micah on the right than micah & sol in the middle and wesley on the right.

Lescott should be nowhere near the team, i'd rather have Titus.

No come on. Lescott looked awful in Moscow. He was the Russians' best hope of a goal all night.

why macca didn't just stick Phil Neville out there I don't know. he might be a clogger, but you want your experienced heads in a game like that, not someone making their first ever international start

Think you hit the nail on the head in that las part.
Possibly better to have a defender start in an international game for his debut, to settle in rather than sub him on in a "must win game".

Venables against 'knee-jerk reaction'

England assistant coach Terry Venables has urged the Football Association not to make a "knee-jerk reaction" if Steve McClaren's side fail to qualify for Euro 2008.

McClaren's tenure as manager would almost certainly come to an end if they do not reach the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer, and last month's defeat to Russia means their qualification destiny is now out of their hands.

But Venables told The Sun: "If the FA is convinced they have someone better who will instantly transform us into World Cup winners then fine. But they must make sure they come to a decision for the right reasons not just because it seems right at one particular moment."

He added: "We are not thinking about our futures. Whatever happens to me and Steve McClaren will happen. That is out of our hands but knee-jerk reactions will be a mistake in my view."

England's best hope of qualification is for Russia to drop points away to Israel next Saturday and for the Three Lions to then beat Croatia at Wembley on November 21.

Venables added: "Steve is quite bullish at the moment. When you have a chance of qualifying you have to be. We are concentrating on one thing only and that is beating Croatia."
