yeah because world class players weren't exceptions 'back in the day'? 4 for every position iirc. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Steve Bull went to the 1990 World Cup iirc. Steve Hodge in 1986. genuine world class imo.

Its not so much we've got worse, we've stagnated and other teams have got better. I am old enough to remember England beatging Turkey 8-0 and Finland 5-0. Doesnt happen any more.
| maybe because Turkey are better now?
I'm old enough to remember eastern europe starving to death, doesn't happen anymore |

Essien far more capable defensively than either Gerrard or Lampard. there's a reason you don't play with that midfield four very often as well. </BLOCKQUOTE>
He's not a defensive midfielder and we don't play with a defensive midfielder unless we're playing the 5 man midfield. Makelele is a defensive midfielder.

| Jesus - it's not about step-overs or showboating. It's about either grabbing a game by the ******** as Gazza could do, or having something in your locker which can turn a game in a second. Natural ability you cannot coach - you are born with it. Problem is at the moment, it's being discouraged at youth level in favour of producing robots who can run all day.

Well I've seen Arsenal play with midfield of Rosicky, Hleb, Fabregas and Walcott at times I'm sure of it. I don't know Arsenal as well as I do Chelsea though. You don't need a defensive midfielder in a 442 formation.

erm, are you just going to ignore any point put to you and keep repeating the same nonsense? Essien is capable enough defensively to get away with playing him in a 442 alongside someone more attacking, as the likes of Vieira and early Roy Keane were. Gerrard and Lampard aren't.
