I'm really glad McClaren has gone, but I'm not going to go off into some rant about how sh*t he was.
He clearly wasn't the man for the job and I don't think he progressed the team in anyway, but I'm sure he tried his best, it's not like he came in with the intention of not getting us to Euro 2008.
He didn't do a good job and the FA can be blamed as much perhaps for appointing him as he can for his performance.
But he's gone now, it's time to look forward and decide who would be the best man for the job.
I absolutely do not want to see Alan Shearer or Paul Ince get the job.
Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi are both free atm and two of the best and most decorated managers in the world and should be right at the top of the list.
Martin O'Neill is imho an absolutely superb manager and should also be right at the top of the list.
I wouldn't like to see Stuart Pearce in charge as I don't think he is the right man yet.
Klinsmann. How would people really feel about having a German in charge of the England team. Personally I have no problem with it, he did a decent job with Germany at the last World Cup and
imo would certainly have the passion needed to coach England.
Going back to English managers, Harry Redknapp is one of the managers I have the most respect for personally, and has never failed to get teams to perform above their weight. Allardyce is another good shout and doubtless posesses the passion required for the post, but he has not been at Newcastle for too long, whilst Redknapp is currently making Portsmouth look like a top four team, sitting in sixth atm.
Gus Hiddink is clearly a quality manager, he's taken two teams to World Cup finals. One of them was South Korea. Imagine what he could do with England. However, he has just got Russia into Euro 2008 so he's surely not going to want to leave. Although they could offer him the job for after the competition but I feel we need to get someone in soon and start making their impact on the team well before the World Cup 2010 qualifiers.
Scolari should be discounted, despite being a brilliant manager, he would never get on with the press hounding him all the time.
That brings us on to Jose Mourinho. Clearly one of the best managers in the world. Steered Porto to Champions League victory in 2004 aswell as the UEFA cup the year prior to that. Also won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, back to back no less. There is no doubt that Mourinho is one of the top few managers in the world today.
But. Despite all this, is he the right man for the job personality wise? Would it become all about him if he took the job? Personally, given what he has achieved, I don't have a problem with him taking the job. It would certainly be a breathe of fresh air and something to look forward to in post match interviews.
So for me, the managers I would like to see considered are:
Mourinho
Lippi
Capello
O'Neill
Klinsmann
Redknapp
Hiddink
IMO it has to be one of these seven men. I honestly can't say who I would choose if you told me I had to choose now. Although any one of them looks a good bet.
Oh and someone said Beckham for player/manager? Not sure if it was a joke but tbh, could work
