The controversial TV screening of a Shakira concert in Afghanistan could inspire suicide bombers, local political and religious figures have claimed.
A recent broadcast of the Colombian pop star playing live is said to have angered MPs and Muslim clerics, who fear a reaction from the radical edges of the war-torn country.
State television has screened interviews criticising the show, while one pro-government newspaper said there could be a bloody reaction in the aftermath.
However, Saad Mohseni, owner of Tolo, the station who broadcast the programme, has defended the decision. "The Government is looking for an excuse to have a go at us.
"When we give air time to the Taliban we are 'talking to terrorists'; when we air people criticising the Government we are told we are 'opposing peace and reconciliation'", he said.
There has been no confirmation from Shakira about the media furore in Afghanistan.
