I used to play chess a lot, and have recently got into it a lot more. If any of you like playing chess, have you tried playing on http://www.chessclub.com/? I downloaded the free trial and have ended paying for the subscription - highly recommended. If you do try it, mail me as we can mention that I've recommended you.
If you're students, I believe you get a discount too, and its quite addictive. There are quite a lot of GMs & IMs on there as well. One of the reasons for mentioning this is that "most" others users on that site are rated higher than me, (as you get given a rating) so I'd like players of my own ability to play against.
I use Chess.com, on there with the same name as here. Feel free to challenge me if you want a game, I'm a good amateur, rated around the 1500 mark on the site and climbing.
Is Chess.com an instant thing though, or one of these where one makes a move, then you get an email saying it's your turn though etc. Try the trial at chessclub. My name is Airwolf on there, as it should be on here
For the cheapskates who want to play "normal" chess, not correspondence chess, I would recommend FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) which is free. Always quite a lot of opponents (from novice to expert level at least). It also provides a lot of chess variants for those who want to test something different.
I've had an on and off interest in chess for years and years. Towards the end of my school days I was a good player, I could beat everyone in my school, including all of the teachers! I didn't play that much at university until the final year when my interest revived, played for the university B team a couple of times. Since moving down here for work I haven't played much at all, which is disappointing. When I move to St Albans I'm going to join the club there and play for the teams. Have played quite a bit online as well. Playing a few people on facebook at the moment, but I find that quite tricky as I can't remember where pieces have moved from before and what's actually going on in the game. That application needs a function where you can look back at the state of the board a few moves ago.
There's been a few OTF chess tournaments in my time, Bagpuss and Maple are the best players. Maple basically the only person who beats me at things on OTF
http://www.worldchesslive.com/, formerly WCN used to be my playground. Will probably pick it up in the near future again. I did beat a Serbian grandmaster once on there  Blitz is my forte though.
