Train is generally quickest, most comfortable method of travelling. I don't own a car but even if I did I'd probably still travel by train from London to Manchester as buying in advance it works out cheaper as well.

Agreed. While I recommended Megabus that was because they are cheap andi've used them once as I was on my own.
When I was younger before I could drive I used to regulary get a National Express from London to Middlesbrough to visit family. Never again, car ftw.
