| it's cheaper to do two singles generally as they sell cheap seats singles only. Otherwise it's a saver return and will cost more

Unless OP's mate lives by Heathrow, in which case it's probably true.
Wouldn't be cheaper though, I just put it in Expedia and came out at £99.80 per person with BMI cheapest.

train is much more pleasant than flying imo, the planes to london are tiny and have little facilities, much more room on a train, and when you factor in the travelling times to airports, and check in times etc it's probably quicker to from Manchester - London, and it's generally cheaper though not always.

£20 return via national express funfares, although i'd strongly suggest the train, but their website is mentally slow atm, so I cba to look.
Try getting Manchester-Birmingham and Birmingham-London return tickets, it might work out cheaper, and sometimes you don't even have to change trains.

Plus the airports tend to be in the middle of nowhere as opposed to train stations which are in the centre of the city. So you have to end up paying for train tickets anyway to get where you want to go from the airport.

Megabus is rubbish for not leaving from Nottingham. Doesn't affect you, but its working out more expensive for me to go from Nottingham to Birmingham than it is to go from Birmingham to Brighton.

Have to admit I've vowed never to travel by coach again if I can avoid it.
Has to be the slowest, most painstaking form of transport in the world. Had a nightmare journey from London to Manchester that took 7 hours in the middle of the night.
Train is generally quickest, most comfortable method of travelling. I don't own a car but even if I did I'd probably still travel by train from London to Manchester as buying in advance it works out cheaper as well.

Taking into account pretrol, parking and just the hassle of driving in London, anything is better

At least, that's what it was when I last had to do it.
Nodoubt there are SuperSaver fares or something that may be cheapert. They'll take longer, though. Probably.
