Default how is this done?!

Like the members of PST advised; use brushes. Search for them with Google using the keywords: brushes photoshop download.

The silhouette can be created by selected only the sky with the magic wand tool, reversing the selection and bringing down the brightness with any of the image adjustment tools like curves, level, brightness/contrast, etc. Extra manual adjustments might be needed.

I'd say that they played with the channels. Find a channel that has a lot of contrast in it. Copy and run some colorization on it...

There are 2 ways to do like this.

you need a 2 different image.
background and layer1
background colour is red. And Layer1 is colour burn. Or,
background colour is red. And Layer1 is multiply.
