I'd guess that would be the 5 team group ? Maybe only group winners getting through in that one. In which case, i hope that isnt ours. Unless the missing side is a 2nd seed </BLOCKQUOTE>
no there'll be some complicated system in place that discounts the results against the lowest team in the group, thus a team could finish with more points than another but not get a playoff place. It's stupid though, as they are all facing different opposition. Should just let Gibraltar in now and have even groups.

If not, are England seeded ?
Currently in the final top seed position. Should remain there after tomorrow's results. Only Greece or Romania have a realistic chance to overtake England and even then it's an outside chance.

Seeding
After initially proposing to use a similar system to recent World Cup and European Championship qualification (based on results across the previous two European qualification cycles), the UEFA Executive Committee decided on 27 September 2007 at its meeting in Istanbul that seeding for the qualifiers would be based on FIFA World Rankings, in accordance with the FIFA World Cup regulations (which note that where teams are ranked on "performance" criteria, the FIFA World Rankings must be used).
The FIFA World Ranking used for seeding will be the most recent at the time of the preliminary draw, namely the November edition. Initially scheduled for 21 November, the release date was moved to 23 November to include the final match days of Euro 2008 qualification.
Format
Eight groups of six teams and one group of five will contest the European qualifying competition for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The nine group-winners will qualify directly, while the highest ranked eight of the nine second-placed teams will contest home and away play-off matches for the remaining four places. In determining the rank of second-placed teams, only results against those finishing 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th will be counted.

Probably. Depends on what results from 4 years ago, or however long it is that's taken into account, are replaced by their games against Macedonia and England.

Is that how they calculate ? Like the old Tennis system. I thought it was based on current sides rankings and they were weighted in some way. I never paid attention but now i find out they're actually going to mean something it annoys me.
Must factor in that superb 1-0 over Austria too

They use the weightings as well. Depends on the other teams' ranking and what competition the fixture is in. Think confederation is taken in to account as well.
The games Scotland will lose are the playoff games against Holland. Means we've still got another year of the Berti shambles to win points against.

Ok, I just took a look at the calculation method at Wikipedia, and the big drop in ranking relevance of a match occurs when it's no longer in the last 12 months.
Date of match Multiplier
Within the last 12 months x 1.0
12-24 months ago x 0.5
24-36 months ago x 0.3
36-48 months ago x 0.2
This means the biggest impact in England's ranking will be from the 1-1 draw away at Holland from this period last year. Croatia will lose a victory away at Israel and Romania a victory away at Spain.
