English press ftl. Shameful, the way they build up everyone, then just as quickly knock them down.

This week watching the European football on TV reminded me of how bad it can get. I know more than the average English bloke about German football, but I didn't realise I knew more than English commentators. They were talking about German football as if it was some oddity from the other side of the planet, and they didn't know any players who weren't somehow connceted with the Premier League.
| waas gonna say, i listen to 3 podcasts, and they were all saying how much trouble sam was in, i found this a little strange as well, they seem to be saying the pressure is coming from mike ashley, ah well, don't really care either way when it comes to newcastle. isn't the guardia one with guillem balague? pretty sure he's not english

Guillem Balague and Gabriele Marcotti are on the Times podcast, which is the one I tend to listen to. It's fairly insightful but prone to the same thing.
I do a spot of football reporting (less this season as I gig all the time) and I've been amazed at the fecklessness you get in the average press box. They're all hopelessly insecure and do a lot of talking over points in the matches, to make sure they all weakly agree on the same line. The press box and, afterwards, the interview room are all abuzz with pub-level speculation and banter, the difference being this stuff actually makes it into the papers.
I covered Blackburn 4 - 3 (or was it 2?) Man Utd and had the guy from the Times asking me whether I thought Rio had had a terrible game. I said no and made excuses for him, purely to be contrary really, and voila, the eventual report wasn't too hard on Rio. God forbid they actually form their own opinions by watching the match, rather than latch onto the first appealing line someone comes up with, and whip each other up into a frenzy over it.
I always thought that football reporters might be somehow qualified to write about the game, and might've studied it. I promised myself that, if I ended up making it my profession, I'd do my coaching badges (kind of want to do them anyway) so I could speculate more authoritatively.
Guillem Balague is a bit of an exception, as is Marcotti. Seems genuinely knowledgeable and extremely well-connected, so he's generally got something worthwhile to say.

Well obviously sky dug up a few muppetts who were saying "if this carries on etc" but thought I'd see what the OTF mob thought.
That Alan Oliver who BG has referred to a few times came out and said it was the worst performance he's ever seen apparently.
