I was an awesome/ greedy attacking midfielder.
As Poyps said, game was ruined by making fouling off the ball illegal. It was a crucial element of defensive tactics!

Your player follows the cross hair. Press A to tackle.
Hold down left mouse button and you get a power bar up the top. The closer the cross hair to your player when you let go determines the height of the kick.
Fairly sure right mouse button does something too but fecked if I can remember what.

it's just an auto kick, without the power bar
pressing a to tackle also a useful way of hitting the ball when it's in the air
