Got a friend (girlie) who is getting a laptop for Christmas, £400 to spend on a laptop to do the usual girlie stuff such as t'internet and office type stuff.
I'm thinking about ditching my 5 year old desktop PC and getting myself a nice new laptop.
I want quite a top end laptop, and am willing to spend around £1300. I'm not in any rush, so quite happy to wait for the right deal.
So what makes are good?
What is the minimum spec I should be looking at?
It it worthwhile waiting, is there going to be any likely price drop or new processors etc worth waiting for?
If you can find anything with a Turion X2 TL processor or a Core 2 Duo, and 2gb ram for that price then that'd be a very good deal. Not sure there are too many laptops like that out there though, but do have a look.
Might wanna read some reviews as well to find out other things that might be useful, such as how durable it is, if the build quality is good, if the screen is good etc.
www.notebookreview.com is a good place to start. Got a forum section for "Which notebook should I buy?" as well.
I ordered one yesterday, a Dell XPS M1330. Normally I'd prefer a slightly bigger one (This one has a 13.3" screen. Normally I'd want 15.4), and taking performance over style, but it's just sooo stylish, and from all the reviews I've read of very high quality all around, especially the screen. Weighs little over 4lbs  Got it with a 2ghz C2D, 2 gb ram and a geforce 8400M (Which isn't great, but then the only games I play are FM, Paradox games etc. No FPS games. So it's good enough).
The best part? 15% student discount, free delivery and another £40 or so off on top of that.

I think the next big upgrade in processors will be 2nd quarter of 2008, with both Intel and AMD releasing new products. IIRC Intel will be releasing a small upgrade to the current Santa Rosa line (i.e the mobile version of the Core 2 Duo). As for graphics I really have no idea.
Oh, and would you be looking at an actual laptop, (I.e mobility, going to carry it with you a lot) or more of a "desktop replacement"? (i.e will be mostly stationary, so size/weight matters little, but of course has the advantage that it *can* be moved). What "high end" is would vary drastically, a £1300 13" laptop would have much worse specs than a £1300 20" desktop replacement.

More of a desktop replacement. I'm increaingly finding myself working from home of late. So quite powerful and position all day. have the ability to sit where I want in the house, without having to to say sat in the same
I'm willing to wait till the right time, if there is one.
I quite like the look of Lenovos, and also the XPS by Dell.
