lute olsen is the MAN though
during my indecisive years, I applied to northern arizona on a plan to stay there 2 years, establish residency, then transfer to ua to finish my music degree. great program there, although I probably would have melted in tempe.

| Northern Arizona is public, isn't it? How come no out-of-state there?

the tuition was still about $4k/year cheaper at nau and I had some connections and was looking at a scholarship I wasn't going to get at ua as well.

Don't just shout names! Why Stanford? Why Arizona? Why couldn't I go wrong with Berkeley or UCLA?

| Dave probably the only one who knows what he's talking about in regard to your question. I'm just operating under the assumption that behemoth public universities like Cal and UCLA are unlikely to have any truly weak departments.

It just seems like you're missing out on what makes the US so good if those years are going to be spent solely on the University. I've known I've wanted to come for the country for a very long time, tbh I'm coming to experience American life as much as the quality of the education itself.
| schools that you need to think about :
Harvard
Columbia
Penn
Brown (maybe)
Chicago
Northwestern (maybe)
Pomona (maybe)
Berkeley
Georgetown
MIT (not sure what their undergrad economics is like, or if they even have it. Sloan iqg though)
NYU
if you want to go a little farther afield - Rice, Emory, Michigan (Ann Arbor iqg, rest of Michigan? not so much), Vanderbilt (for reals), Boston College, Tufts. </BLOCKQUOTE>
meh, finances permitting for all of these, and tbqh names like Harvard and Columbia don't excite me in the slightest, same goes for Georgetown and NYU because of the cities. Would settle for an urban liberal arts institution if I don't pull off Chicago, would still be ecstatic at that.

10 years ago arizona was the best school west of the mississippi for music theory/music teaching/conducting. the grad program is robust offering up to doctorates.

I went to look round ASU when I was considering applying to an American uni. Cannot speak for the music department unfortunately (which is all you want really) but it looks a great place. The Gamage (?, The Frank Lloyd Wright one) Auditorium is incredible.
And Tempe has such a fantastic feel to it with some great record shops too. Would happily live there (or Scottsdale if I could ever afford it). So, er... what else would you ever need to know.
