They can't because there is no alternative.
| There’s no alternative because people aren’t trying to find one. If enough people want buses they’ll put the buses on. Problem is too many people think go straight to their cars without even looking into ways they could improve the bus service.

Guess what, we only have few buses and they are expensive. All the bus drivers moved out the countryside and there's no **** left to drive them.
Low pay and distance to travel to work even affects the bus drivers. Not even the poles want to do it.

public transit here is subsidised, you can buy monthly or yearly passes to drive down costs and some employers even subsidise the cost of the passes to push it down even further. a pass that's good on all buses, lightrail, tram and streetcar in the city costs me about $273/year iirc, taken out bi-weekly pre-tax.
| We have the same here.
A yearly metro pass costs £400 which works out at roughly £1.50 per day if working a 5-day week.
Most people in here complaining about the prices of the public transport are doing it based on single tickets. If I were to buy single tickets every day to travel to work I’d probably pay about £1,040 per year on travel, which is far more than the £400 I actually pay.

I live 10 miles from work, which means i do 100 miles a week going to & from work. Cost of that is about £10 a week (i.e. 10p a mile). If a were to catch a train to work it would cost me £7 a day. There are no buses.
Is public transport really cheaper than driving?
| start factoring depreciation into that to get a more realistic cost.

| tbf that's exactly the view I take. I rarely use public transport, and will admit to making quite a lot of unnecessary journies in the car, but I don't complain about fuel prices or car tax or whatever Quote:

| yes but how many people actually car-share in reality? that's the whole problem.
also unless you have a super-economical car then even cost of fuel will be more than £10 per week
