If four of you travel by public transport your costs are quadrupled. If four of you travel by car your costs are quartered.

I live 10 miles from work, which means i do 100 miles a week going to & from work. Cost of that is about £10 a week (i.e. 10p a mile). If a were to catch a train to work it would cost me £7 a day. There are no buses.

Is public transport really cheaper than driving?

do you ever get large scale fuel protests like this in the usa? </BLOCKQUOTE>nope. </BLOCKQUOTE>

were there not huge protests a few years ago, which resulting in sizeable price cuts? or is that an urban myth. </BLOCKQUOTE>if that happened, I missed them and the resulting price cuts :/

public transit here is subsidised, you can buy monthly or yearly passes to drive down costs and some employers even subsidise the cost of the passes to push it down even further. a pass that's good on all buses, lightrail, tram and streetcar in the city costs me about $273/year iirc, taken out bi-weekly pre-tax.

as noted above, I think he's talking about those indymedia-style chain emails that go out telling people not to buy gas on x date to protest something or other. and even the people who do the "protest" just tank up the night before meaning no impact whatsoever.

If the service is crap then do something about it. Too many people just accept poor service and do nothing to try and make it better themselves
They can't because there is no alternative. The deregulation of the bus system in the early 90's was supposed to increase competition. Fine if you live in a city, where there are good transport links. However, if you live in a semi rural/rural area, you became knackered for choice because the biggest company in the area bought up all of the smaller ones, and there you have a monopoly. So, this service can do what it likes because there is no alternative, save for getting yourself a car (which is what I did in the end)
