congestion charging instead of fuel tax ridiculous idea, I didn't know fuel only polluted the atmosphere when it was being used in a traffic jam
Your right it doesn`t, but if you re in a traffic jam, then more than likely you are in/near a built up area with public transport and/or going the same direction as someone you could car share with.

Quote:
those who use the busy roads pay more fuel tax anyway is it uses up more fuel to get them anywhere. You get to swan around with no traffic and you expect everyone else to pay for you to do it?
More often than not travel in remote areas requires longer distances that the have to travel to work, so they probably use the same fuel as someone who goes a short distance in a traffic jam. So they are being penalised for having to use a car.

[quote]Get rid of road tax and stick it on the fuel price too, if I use a car once a year and someone else uses it everyday I shouldn't have to subsidise him[/b]

No problem with this, but as road charging would do this and provide a solution to driving short distances in areas with good/better public transport, by charging them more, I see litle point in solving one problem, but not the other.

The simple point I`m making is, the car is not a dinosaur yet. It has to be used by many people due to poor infrastructure. These people are the ones who do require the car, so you need to find a way of taxing the hell out of the drivers who use cars in areas they don`t have too, otherwise known as road pricing.

Anyone stopping the fuel leaving the depots again should be used as target practice for the military.

Not in semi rural Cumbria it isnt.

So, and this is the important question of this whole debate, should I be buying shares in oil companies or not?

It's the same for Northumberland. I guess it will be around the £4 mark for a one way 15mile journey to Newcastle. The public transport there is rotten - the buses are in an awful state. :thdn:

My work does an employee travel deal where you get a yearly metro pass and a set amount comes out of your wages each month. I only pay £32.42 each month which gets me anywhere on the metro system. I also never miss the money because it’s automatically deducted for my wages each month so I don’t miss what I’ve never had.

I don’t drive, but if I did I’d like to think I’d accept the prices as it would be more of a convenience and there are enough alternatives available for cheaper.

Neil - if you live in somewhere like Bedlington, Ashington or Blyth - there are no alternatives to the bus if you don't drive. There's no rail service, no Metro, etc. It's why the bus service is so expensive and rubbish, because there is no competition.

I would imagine the buses are only expensive because you’re paying for individual journeys. The cost comes down considerably if you’re paying for a weekly / monthly / yearly pass.

If the service is crap then do something about it. Too many people just accept poor service and do nothing to try and make it better themselves.
