my main point being, if you can be more specific about what it is easily why not be? everyone knows what an ipod is, so you can call it an ipod and everyone knows what you are on about. all the other mp3 player brans you cant do this with, so a general term has to be used so people know without you spending ages explaining what it is
| Everyone knows what an mp3 player is, so why do you have to specifically point out that yours is an 'iPod'?
What difference does naming your device by its brand have? The majority of non-iPod's are simply called 'mp3 players' and thats sufficient, so why does the iPod get seemingly special treatment? That's my point. </BLOCKQUOTE>
your point is crap. If someone owns a Dell they call it a Dell. Not a Standard ATX case with core2duo and half a gig of ram </BLOCKQUOTE>
That would actually be an "IBM compatible PC"

To answer the original question i-pod is a brand name like a ps3 or xbox 360, therefore people who own one of them call it by the brand name.
The use of ipod for any other type of mp3 player is just incorrect and relates to first mover advantage, such as Hoover or Thermos when the product they are referring to is neither a Hoover or a Thermos, but just a vac or a flask. It is the power of being the first entrant into a market or being the most commonly recalled brand name in that market, businesses would pay millions to gain first mover advantage.

Much ado about nothing. For the original poster, I don't think that many people are trying to show off by calling their MP3 players "ipods". It just become part of everyday life and a cultural icon due to Apple's brilliant marketing. The Sony Walkman which was mentioned is another good example, though in that case people actually called portable cassette players by other brands "walkmans", and nobody thought it odd. However, that was different, as Sony invented the things and Apple did not invent portable MP3 players.
Anyway, my point is that people don't give special treatment to ipods - they have just been brainwashed by Apple's marketing. Only anally-retentive people would make an effort not to use the term, and in doing so draw attention to themselves, as if they're the ones trying to make a point.
Btw, I call my shuffle and video ipod "ipod".

Basically what Gregg said up the page. People think of mp3 players as ipods the same way most people call Pepsi Coke even though they know its Pepsi.

They play both. You still get so many people thinking ipods don't play mp3s. No idea where that came from tbh.
