1 - the syllables being fewer to say ipod; by the time you have said ipod and moved onto the next word, or finished speaking, you would only have said mp of mp3 player
2 - marketing; the ipod is marketed simply as an ipod, whereas other devices are marketed as something like '[brand][model] mp3 player', and its the same with mac instead of laptop


fwiw, a lot of people also call mp3 players of other brands ipods too, for the ease of saying it, but also for the same reason why people call all mobile personal casette/cd players walkmans, and why people call all vacuum cleaners hoovers - its in the branding, it becomes synonymous, they are essentially interchangeable.

are there any other items you have issues with people calling them one thing instead of another?

Apple don't call it one because it plays more than mp3s. People call it an iPod because that's its name.

I think it just comes down to the fact that, when you think of mp3 players, the first thing that comes into your head is an "iPod", the name is synomous (sp?) with the term Mp3 player, and lets face it, how many people who have an average knowledge of the digital age, would know what an iRiver, or Creative Zen is, cause the other day my mum had paul o'grady on and even he was talking about iPod.

and back in the day when iPods cost £300-£400,I think it would have been well within a persons rights to show it off and say "I've got an iPod" seeing as they payed so much for it these days they're pretty reasonable in price, so a lot of people have em.

anyway your point is pretty pointless tbh, an iPod deserves to be out in its own to be called iPod, while the rest of em should simply be called mp3 players. :thup:
