Venue: Old Trafford
< Updates: BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sport website and mobile

Team news to follow later.

BIG MATCH STATS

Qualification

Manchester United have already qualified for the knockout phase of this season's Champions League.

Head-to-heads

Manchester United and Sporting CP have met each other on three previous occasions in European competition.

United won their first encounter 4-1 in 1964 but lost the second leg 5-0. United won this season's match in Lisbon 0-1.

European history

Last season, Manchester United were eliminated in the semi-finals by AC Milan.

Sporting have never survived the CL group phase.

Current European form

Manchester United are the only team to have won all four of their CL matches this season. They have won their last eight CL home matches - a British record - and are unbeaten in 11 at Old Trafford. They have not lost in the CL at the Theatre of Dreams since 23 February 2005, when AC Milan recorded a 0-1 victory.

Sporting have won only two of their last 16 matches in the Champions League.

Player and disciplinary info

Cristiano Ronaldo is joint top scorer (four goals) in this season's Champions League, with Internazionale's Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Nemanja Vidic is the only Manchester United player to have played every minute in the Champions League this season.

Liedson, Tonel, Abel, Joao Moutinho and Miguel Veloso have all played every minute of Sporting CP's CL matches this season.

Other miscellaneous facts

Sporting CP need to score two goals to record 350 in European competition.

Manchester United lost 1-0 at Bolton on Saturday and are in second place in the Barclays Premier League with 30 points, three points behind leaders Arsenal. Meanwhile, Sporting CP drew 1-1 at Leixoes, and in third in the Portuguese Liga, 10 points behind leaders FC Porto.
We win this, we take top spot which gives us a "easier" tie in the next round, would rather go to Rome knowing we've qualified and can just enjoy the trip without having the game at the back of my mind.

Would like Fergie to play the strongest team possible considering our next prem game is Monday night. So something like this plz

VDS

Brown
Rio
Vida
Evra

Nani
Hargreaves
Anderson
Ronaldo

Saha
Tevez

With Giggsy nowhere to be seen

Prediction, 2-0 to us, scorers Nani and Tevez

I think it will only be a strong-ish side. Can see Fletcher and O'Shea both getting a game.

It's Tuesday / Sunday for us, so expect full teams for both, with some rested the weekend before at Reading.
Will then probably proceed to get dumped out the League Cup at Stamford Brdige the Tuesday (Wed?) after our game with you lot.

But mentally having to go to France and win then play us will be hard

But we have a nothing game where the kids can play, and let the lads mentally nad physically build them selves up to go to merseydive
