While listening to the Eagles new embarrassment of a song I got to thinking why rock musicians are generally unproductive after some point in their late 20s to mid 30s. There are exceptions like Neil Young, U2, and Tom Petty who still seem to be able to create interesting music in their middle ages. However, I think typically there is a lot of inspiration in youth and then either no recordings or really bad output later in life.
What's especially odd is that this seems unique to rock music. Older artists seem more productive in other musical art forms as well as other art forms in general.
Because they've generally forgotten what it's like to be young and talented, and instead are gorged, self indulgent, and surrounded by sycophants who will allow them free reign.
Oh, and because misguided fans actually still buy anything to do with them.
Most musicians will run out of ideas and their songs will all start to sound like other songs they have done, etc. Need to be an exceptional musician/songwriter to keep going for year after year.
rock music is basically that of the angry young man.
the disaffected.
give him lots of money (or at least a reasonable, middle-income amount) and what's he got left to be angry about?
Tax?
my 'fix' was to ensure that all musicians signed to a record label weren't given much cash at all...make them live in squalor/borstal type arrangements until the albums are all sold and the end of the 4-album deal has expired.
then give them the money...
it's because pop/rock (and now rap) music is abysmally shallow and there's only so many ways a band can sing about a broken heart and how great it is to rawk before people get sick of hearing them.
