Just starting Umberto Eco's "Baudolino". it seems mid-way between The Name of the Rose and "Foucault's Pendulum" so far in terms of obscurity. Has anyone read it, and is it worth perservering with?

William of Baskerville is such a blatant rip-off of Brother Cadfael, so Umberto can kiss my arse.
I suppose he did make William a Franciscan monk rather than a Benedictine - so kudos for that spark of originality. Booooooo!

This is a bit more fiction interwoven with reality, but if it is as good as Pompeii then it should be a cracker.
| Out in paperback this week. It's the story of the rise (and fall) of Cicero...about 60 pages in. Good so far.

Cicero in "Rome" looks like the Dad of my best mate in school... right down to the jug ears.
Irrelevant I know.

| Liked it a lot, but it does get rather tedious at some point... The end leaves you with a nice feeling, no waste of time...

Having finished my degree, I can read guilt free \o/
finished 'an artist of the floating world' by kazuo ishiguro a bit ago. It's good, but not as utterly superb as remains of the day or never let me go, not quite as dark either. I really like him though, one of my favourite authors, and I will be sniffing out anything else he's written.
about to start 'the border trilogy', a big book about cowboys I got off a relative for christmas. Cowboys is not a subject that interests me at all, but my dad says that it's really good and miles better than he expected. He usually gives pretty good book advice so I'm going for this next.
also on the list is 'six degrees', non fiction about the predicted effects of global warming over the next century. It's a subject that really interests me and is obviously going to be of massive importance over the next few years. Could be a bit scary though.
my girlfriend's trying to get me to read 'brick lane', can't remember who it's by. she was raving about it so might give it a go. other than that, there's not any obvious books I've got lined up, so I might peruse this thread a bit. I guess I've just hardly been thinking about books during my finals, I'd always had intentions to read afterwards, but never thought about which ones. i'll read the next harry potter when that comes out, that's not going to take long though.
thinking of trying 'the rise and fall of the third reich' by William Shirer. Seems to be pretty highly rated and the subject matter is something that fascinates me. It's quite huge though. Is it worth bothering?
