ffs don't buy a Fiat!!!
Newish Fiesta, Golf, Lupo or Corsa will suit your needs and probably better going for a diesel car due to the current fuel prices.

He would pay more for the diesel than the equivalent petrol so I guess it depends on how many miles he covers or how long he intends to keep it to make it cost effective.

VW Lupo or Seat Arosa , same car really. Great, reliable, economical cars that look great with a few pound spent on them.
im a bit biased as i have one but they are great.

I love my Ford escort. You can get a very good 2nd hand one with minimum mileage for that kind of money.

Even with the odd niggle, I'd rather get something a bit different and stylish.
A reliable, economical Diesel is good common sense but fiarly common and boring.

I got a 54 reg 1.2 Clio for just under £4k, 1 lady owner 9000 miles. Was a bargain, I've put 5000 miles on it since the start of September, but runs nice and cheap 50+ mpg
