Totally what he said, especially the first one. Gives a great account of English footballing woes, press intrusion, dumb English abroad...in one book, based around Italia 90.

Steve Claridge biog, written by Martin Ridley. Ridley also wrote a book about his times taking over non-league Weymouth, which is also worth a read as it gives you an idea of the low-life scum who frequent the game.

In terms of autobiogs, read the one by Tony Cascarino. Steer clear of any present-day football biog pap. My mum enjoyed the most recent book about Bobby Charlton too.

If you can get it, buy Soccer at War by Jack Rollin.

Left Foot Forward, and especially Left Foot In The Grave, both by Goldstone Gaz (Garry Nelson) are must reads. The latter is absolutley fantastic.

'Gullhanger' by Mike Ward is pretty good too, if you can stomach someone who supported Arsenal changing allegience and getting a Brighton season ticket in the year they won the Division Two Championship.

I'd also echo Bri - you really should pick up a copy of Rothmans at least once in your life. Sad stats geek that I am, I buy it every season. There's also a Non League equivelent, which is patchy (because IIRC the clubs provide a lot of information themselves) - but excellent reference, nonetheless.

I've heard good things about Don't Give Up The Day Job , which I bought a couple of years ago, lost when I moved bedrooms, and have only recently found - must read it sometime.

This looks good, too; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pointless-Jeff-Connor/dp/075531...id=1196289463&sr=8-1

Rothmans.

Slightly repetitive I must concede however.
title? </BLOCKQUOTE>

sorry, I was joking, Rothmans publish ( or at least did ) annuals of every season, so basically just filled with stats of clubs and that's it. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Renamed the Sky Sports Football Yearbook now iirc  </BLOCKQUOTE>

Indeed, because of the tobbacco advertising ban, IIRC. Still edited by Jack & Glenda Rollin, as it has been for donkeys years.

Rofl...yes, i know. It was mentioned here and i was intrigued. Frankly, a bit self absorbed he is, but it really made me realize just how hard the job is compared to just about every other sport. Having said that, boy did it go on and on.

Pointless was very intersting. it's about East Stirlingshire, the worst team in Scotland for many years.
