I don't see the problem. "hi, how are you? what you up to? rah rah rah end conversation". Not much harm in that. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Yeah it's all fine until the awkward silence as you both ponder the next point of discussion. At that point it becomes a problem.

I hate it when it's a long street and you see someone too early. You then have the uncomfortable experience of either walking the whole way whilst looking/smiling at them or looking like a twat and looking away.
haha, reminds me of when you're walking down a corridor and the person in front holds door-after-door open for you. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Happened to me today. Some bloke said thanks to me about 5 times.

No, it's quite easy to end a conversation politely.

Haha yeah that's pretty funny. Occasionally if you're quite near to the person in front t his can result in the door opening INTERCHANGE, a phenonema that is only experienced once every few years.
i never usually initiate stop and chats unless i have something specific to say. if i'm caught by one, i just usually talk about myself if there's an awkward lull in the conversation. it's the one subject i know inside out yet still find interesting. i'm sure ceefax will agree with me if he comes in here later.
basically i find it's easier to have a reputation as a bit of a self-obsessed twat than a total bore. plus, they started the conversation, so why the **** wouldn't they be interested in me?
just say something appropiately pleasant and inane and if you don't like talking to them just apologise for the massive rush you're in and go. big deal.
I feel this is an appropriate place to mention this; I quite often wear big mother****ing headphones whilst out and about. Despite this, I've had two complete randoms walk up to me and ask questions.
The **** is wrong with them?
And they never repeat what they've just said once you realise that they're talking to you and you take the headphones off so you can actually hear them.
