I am quitting my current job per November 30st (ending December 1st)
I have a job interview scheduled in London on December the 5th, potentially starting a job based there from January.
This means I'll have to drag my booty from Holland to the land of Cockney Rhyming Slang.
Now, my issues are, what to do when taking up the job and making the great migrate
I obviously have to discuss a potential relocation package, but I won't get a studio/house/apartment/couchshare option for the rest of my career (unless it's a really short career)
What are the main focus points when getting an apartment or studio? I won't need a huge place. If it's furbished, I'll have most stuff to really need.
But what are the main hidden points? Taxes like council tax etc? Immigrational dutch ginger bugger fee? etc. etc.
London is quite expensive, I know - but I wouldn't be relocating for an 18k job
Job will be in the Fulham area, what are good places? Don't like Hammersmith (too crowded, sh1thole) but quite some reasons are cool and I don't mind a couple of tube stops distance...
Also, how does crap like NHS, insurance and that kinda freaky stuff work?
You'll find studios often have price that inlcudes bill and council tax. Flats tend not to and just have basic rent.
Council tax will set you back typically about £100 for single person, per month.
Have a look at Fulham itself, Putney, Richmond and few more stops away is Ealing.
Not sure about NHS, sure someone else can help. As for insurance, if you are renting, contents insurance is all you'll need. I'm with Cornhill, scanning the web you'll find loads more.
it's pretty much in Putney..... having been to Fulham - Pompey, I have had a brief look at the area.
Fulham, Putney seem good... have also been to Gunnersbury, basically... most of the area is appealing.. as long as there are shops and necessities nearby and as long it's not a crap area and not crap to commute
Travel costs can be fairly expensive - but not too bad if you're earning good money.
But travel costs and journey times would major considerations for me.
Had a gf who lived in Zone 6 but worked in Zone 1.
She repaid a fair bit of what she saved in council tax on travel (Oyster card iirc) and spent two-and-a-half hours travelling every day
She could have got cheaper places of a similar standard in more central areas.
NHS, well surely you have an EHIC card anyway? so you should be fine in the short term with that, I assume you'll get a national insurance number when you get a new job, and when you've got that I guess you'll be entitled to the NHS the same as any British system. Generally free healthcare with a few exceptions.
Wandsworth council tax is the cheapest in England which is pretty awesome  works out at less than £200 for the year for me.
Clapham is probably the best area in the south of London to live (not that I'm biased or anything) but I don't think there are many studios around here. If you were to live near clapham junction your transport links would be pretty good to anywhere.
