San - go in, see how you get on. You can always leave early, which is what I do. It means that people can see you're genuinely ill and you get the nice drive home feeling like you've done the right thing.

How ill do you need to be to miss a day of work? Post #32
I suppose that's the difference for me, I can't really get sent home since they will have to find someone to cover my classes, which isn't easy at short notice. I have to decide in advance whether I am fit to last the whole day at work or not.

In my last job I only had 3 days off in 18 months and I literally could not get out of bed as I was ill (had flu iirc), but we were told if you're ill you're ill don't come into work. Working in a retail environment it's not particularly nice to be served by someone with a runny, sneezy nose and someone you can barely understand. I always used to send staff home if they were ill, as I always used to think it looked bad on the company, and plus whatever they had wouldn't spread around the other staff which would lead to them being off as well.
Still it's horses for courses I suppose. We used to have one guy who would literally take it for granted, and be off even with a slight sniffle. When he was interviewed for the job he told us (the manager and I) that he would need 2 weeks off to have surgery on his ankle, he was off for a total of 3 months, when we questioned him about it he just said "We'll I had to lie otherwise I wouldn't have got the job.", we informed the area manager and she, for whatever reason probably legal, refused to sack him for false information. When he did come back he had to be on light duties for a further 3 months which meant he was near useless as he couldn't stand on his feet all day. He eventually left.

If I've just got a cold or something I'll always just go in, see if I can't work on my own or whatnot, or if I'm suffering with the 'flu I'll just work with people I dislike. Chemical warfare ftw.
I've suffered more than once with Labyrynthitis over the past few years which usually gives me a 2-3 week absence, can't possibly work when having your eyes open for any amount of time causes you to vomit due to motion sickness.

i always send people home if they are coughing and sneezing quite badly. A lot of the stuffs they can work at home anyway and that will prevent people from passing the virus around.
