yeah, it's insane to assume that all a team from sweden have to do is win their league every year and keep trying and eventually they'll just magically get better
could just reward them with a fair shot at the group stages every year, but clearly that would be terribly unfair to top teams like celta vigo and chievo

The argument is not that people want the best 32 club sides in the competition. That's not what the competition is about.
The Champions League should reward teams for performing well in their domestic league. With entry for the 4th place team it just rewards mediocrity for that team.
Everton finished 4th 3 years ago and this was talked about as a great accomplishment. It was, but it shouldn't be. 15 years ago, 4th place didn't qualify for Europe.
The Champions League system as it is just makes the rich clubs richer and widens the gap to the other domestic teams and to the national champions of other nations.
| That's where I disagree, I think the competition should be about getting the best 32 teams together and find out which one is the best among the bests. </BLOCKQUOTE>
If you define the best as our current ranked top 32 then we'll have very small geographical diversity. </BLOCKQUOTE>
I didn't know that was a criteria to qualify for the CL.
I'm gonna create a team in some French colony in the Carribean and it will be in the CL every year then

Plus by getting better every year this team will improve its overall league hence getting more places through the UEFA coefficients.
| Yeah, they'll be lucky to get some scraps in a year, then they manage to sign some South American / African / whatever, since that seems to be the whole point of European football recently, and manage to reach, in a total fluke, the 1st knockout stage. They will then get hammered, have all of their half-decent players poached, and return to the starting point, since Manchester United will have made nearly a thousand times more income than this club. </BLOCKQUOTE>
What's your point? Manchester will make 1,000 times more money than this club NO MATTER WHAT THE CL FORMAT IS.
Do you want to reduce Man U's fanbase to make sure people buy Goteborg (sp?) jerseys and not Man Us?
Do you want to reduce Old Trafford to reduce Man U's income?
The fact that some teams are richer than others has nothing to do with the CL and it is not for the CL to fix.

| I think you'll have a hard time having your French colony accepted into UEFA.

It's like if you're applying for a job, actually for 32 jobs and it just happens that 10 of the best 32 candidates are English, should we automatically disregard 6 (or more) of them because we want diversity?
| How long are you going to keep insisting with this madness? The 10 "best" candidates who happen to be English in your analogy are "better" only because they were "spoiled" by their "parents".
Keep giving rich countries' clubs a lot of spots, and they'll make stupidly more money. So whenever they face a Czech or Turkish club they win 7-0. Hahahah that's so funny and nice to watch! I, for instance, haven't watched a CL match since the last year's final (which wasn't that fun anyway), despite having access to virtually every match. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Pretty much sums it up exactly, the only reason they are the 'best' 32 is because they have access to so much more money than the other teams. </BLOCKQUOTE>
And? Tough luck but that's capitalism guys, once you have more money you can do more with it. It appplies to people, corporations and football teams and I see nothing wrong with it. Quote: |
<BLOCKQUOTE> And we get this numbers by dividing the points every team from one nation got divided by the number of teams playing in Europe from that nation so if a coefficient is higher for one league than another it is well deserved.
| If you get every team seeded straight away, rather than having to start from scratch, then it's a lot more difficult to mess up. By the way Russia are most likely to overtake Germany this year, do you think that's deserved? </BLOCKQUOTE>
Yes, numbers don't lie. If Russia gets ahead of Germany then good for them, it also proves my point that it is actually possible for a mid-rank nation to improve. It just takes time and consistency.

| Yep, lets give Chievo or Osasuna another shot instead of letting much bigger traditional clubs with huge fanbases like Red Star or Partizan have a fair chance. Quote: |

| A quick glance at how the Cl income is distributed every year shows how daft that statement is. Porto can wi the Cl every year, they still won't make as much money as United losing in the last 16

| When did Vigo or Chievo got automatically to the group stage?
They had to qualify, just like the Swedish champion.

Israel, Turquey, the "stan" countries are not in Europe but are in the UEFA aren't they?
Plus I was making a joke about geographical diversity being a criteria to qualify for the CL

Football is going to destroy itself eventually. Too much money
where there is money there is corruption.
UEFA have been painted into a corner by messing with the format in the first place. The big teams are used to the money and will never go for a situation that means less.
We might aswell make the big teams franchises of UEFA. Let them satisfy the sponsors for a few years and alienate fans more. It will then fall apart and football will then be back where it should be.
Football will soon become the Africa of the sports world. Raped of it's resources and ditched for the new territory of another sport.
It seems to me a balnced and fair game is now less important than shirt sales figures in the ever expanding Asian market.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh

With 33% country coefficient, straight through to the final qualifying round and Chievo still managed to get battered by Levski in the qualifiers
