The point was players don't consider manager's playing careers when deciding whether to listen to them or not, unless say you're Roy Keane, or Bryan Robson, or Johann Cruyff, but even then after a couple of weeks a player will start judging them on their managerial abilities rather than their playing abilities.

Erm, Hodgson played only a few games for Crystal Palace.
Mourinho played for Belenenses, Rio Ave and AN Other - all at the same or higher standard than Palace were in England.
Benitez played for a number of teams at Spanish second division level; Wenger more often and at a higher level with Mulhouse and Strasbourg.
So, in short, it is very arguable.
