Fixtures

Quite happy that unlike the last two seasons we dont play all the "big" clubs within 5 or 6 games. Hopefully avoiding sticky runs like that will help us push for Europe come next may.

Looks like Melchiot has agreed a 3 year deal and should sign tomorrow.

Speculation that we'll go back in for Koumas and Ellington too

Looking good so far

Filo saying his goodbyes

Utter utter legend

Quote:
If Wigan Athletic ever introduced a Hall of Fame, Aussie keeper John Filan would be installed as the club's all-time number one - Filan hung up his gloves at the end of the season and returns home to his native Sydney next Wednesday.
The 37-year-old will go down as one of the club's greatest ever signings.
He was snapped up for just £600,000 from Blackburn Rovers in December 2001 and, after agreeing to drop down two divisions from the Premier League to the old second division, he went on to play a key role in the club's two promotions, making 202 appearances.

Filan said: "I got my chance in the first team at Wigan and it was definitely the most prosperous club I was at.
"It's been great over the last five-and-a-half years.
"I got to places with Wigan that they'd never got to before and that will always be special.
"What the club has achieved since I joined them has been unbelievable.
"If you'd have said the club would go from the old second division to the Premiership and then stay there, people wouldn't have believed you.
"There were a lot of good times. The promotions and the parties we had afterwards will always stick in my mind.

"When we got promoted at Huddersfield to the first division in 2003 was the first step and one of the best games I played in."
He added: "The people behind the scenes always treated me and my fiancee Emma well.
"We fly back to Sydney next Wednesday. We're ready to go now and definitely looking forward to it.
"I'm dealing with removals at the moment and getting Emma's visa sorted out. We've got a place sorted over there now and we can't wait." Filan revealed he had some last minute offers to stay in England, but his plans were already finalised.

"My agent rang me a few times after the season saying
there might be one or two things," he said. "But we want to go so I told him not to bother looking into it.
"I'm going to be doing lots of surfing and be out on my motorbike.
"I won't need to worry now when I can have a beer!"
So what will he miss most about this country? Certainly not the unpredictable weather.
"No I won't miss that," he laughs. "But I'll definitely miss Sunday lunches and the English pubs.

"But we'll be coming back to England in two years. It's not like I'm not going to touch these shores again. We'll be coming back to visit Emma's sister and her dad."
Filan will remain in contact with his old team-mates – notably goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh – and reckons new manager Chris Hutchings will succeed if he's backed in the transfer market.
"Hutch is a great bloke and knows the game inside out," Filan says. "But the powers that be will need to put the money in."

Why? What basis have you got for thinking this? Or is it just wishful thinking? I think Wigan will be in the relegation mix particularly if Camara leaves, but the players you've got so far and are going for do look like they'll improve the team.

He has a great coaching ability. Yes i know that they say great coaches dont make great managers but i'm willing to give him time.

Hutch has done soo much for us over the last 6 years yet has never gotton the credit he desreves, nor has he gone looking for it, just a case of head down and get on with the job in hand.

As for Camra, i'm hoping he either does go or sorts his head. He offered us nothing for much of last season and was more of a hindrance than a help. If he goes Agahowa will step into the "pace tricky striker" slot.

New thread, new optimism. Despite everyone putting as one of the relegation favourites because we signed Bramble, people don't realise it would take quite an effort to look even more shaky at the back than last season.

Initially unimpressed by the appointment of Hutchings- and we'll see what he's made of when the season starts, but I think he's seems at least to be trying something different with the transfer policy. Jewell seemed to have a very small selection of players that he wanted, and if the transfer fell through there were few second options; hence last season depleted/ageing squad.

With every club now having quite a scouting system, it is difficult for clubs to do a Bolton, and unearth diamonds in far flung players, or established internationals looking for loan moves due to personal differences with their current clubs. We can't compete with the 'new money' of PL second and third tier clubs like West Ham, Portsmouth, Villa, maybe even Sunderland and City if they ever get flogged, but will maybe be able to assist with players looking to pick up the pieces again, after big moves go wrong. We don't tend to get on the backs of players as much as other teams, so if you're feeling low and need a little tlc and nurturing then come to us.

Bramble has a point to prove. Similarly to Heskey, he hasn't developed the potential he was once labelled with after a move to a big club; now classed as lacking the aptitude and appetite for top level football. After some of Halls' performances last season, I don't know if we can be more error strewn. So he doesn't have the pressure of being any worse than what we have/had, and maybe less pressure might allow him to focus on his game. If he shows the desire like Heskey did last season, his game may come on again.

As for the speculation, not keen on Koumas, despite his undeniable quality on the ball, there was a problem with him doing his defensive duties when West Brom were last in the Prem and our Midfield can't afford to go missing. Murphy has a lot of people clamouring for him due to his performance for Charlton against us a couple of seasons ago, but doesn't seem a player capable of holding that form for long.

Speculation-
Ins
Mario Melchiot (Rennes)- Anything that assists in removing the threat of Hall playing CB can only be good.

Danny Murphy (Tottenham)
Michael Brown (Fulham) Am not convinced they will improve us, apart from more options and don't have the capacity to keep these type of players happy on the bench.

Chris Brunt (Sheffield Weds)
Phil Jagielka (Sheffield Utd)

Roy Carroll (West Ham) Think we have already had the best of him.

Jason Koumas (WBA) If he has learnt to tackle in the Championship then good, but West Brom had other midfielders to to carry him, we don't

Nathan Ellington (WBA) Unashamed subscriber to 'Bring the Duke home' faction. Every season it looks more and more unlikely as relations between ourselves and West Brom continue to worsen.

Outs
Leighton Baines (Newcastle)-With Bainsey, although he's a good young English player, he isn't much if any better than what most clubs already have, and aren't willing to pay the silly money that goes for England nationals. Would love him to stay though, and he is handling himself admirably through all this.

Am hurting that fixture list threw up Everton Away first game; pretty popular Away trip and only game I am in England for this year. Still, will beg, borrow or whatever to get there.

A few more decent signings though first please.
