Birmingham City have reportedly given Wigan Athletic permission to talk to manager Steve Bruce about the possibility of returning to the JJB.
Bruce had an eight-match stint in charge of Wigan in April 2001 before leaving to become boss of Crystal Palace. After just five months at Palace he left to take charge of Birmingham, where he has been ever since - but the refusal of the club's new major shareholder, Carson Yeung, to offer him a new contract has unsettled him and his departure would not be a surprise.

Remember you kept coming into the Charlton thread and saying that repeatedly last season, and look what happened >_>

Though I do agree, I think you will go down, depends you you get as manager, plus Boro/Bolton/Fulham/Sunderland/Birmingham will all be in the mix

Yeah. At the time he did a lot of harm by saying he'd sign a contract then bunking off. He then released 15 players - still cant forgive him for releasing Roberto Martinez mind you - but a lot of the players he did release were crap and really he saved Jewell the job of doing that when he took over after Bruce.

Plus he got Kevin Nichols actually looking like a decent footballer which got a  from me. And he also nearly killed Alan PArdew which gets  x2

Karen Brady was apparantly on SSN around 9pm saying that they are considering our approach so it seems the BBC might have jumped the gun.

Wonder how much compo Brum would want for him. Cant be much if Whelan is after him

Dave Whelan has offered Birmingham a record-breaking £3million compensation package in a bid to make Steve Bruce the new Wigan Athletic manager.

Last night the Wigan chairman, who is on holiday in Barbados, was still waiting for permission from Birmingham to speak to Bruce. City's managing director Karren Brady said last night that the request was being considered.

But Whelan remains hopeful that he will get his man because Brady and her employers ultimately feel a moral obligation to let Bruce go.

Whelan is also set to exploit the uncertainty surrounding Bruce's future at Birmingham, whose prospective new owner Carson Yeung snubbed the chance to authorise a new deal for the manager.

Whelan said: 'The Chinese people who are supposed to be taking over at Birmingham will not give Steve an answer on extending his contract, which is running out. So he is a candidate for us.'

One sticking point last night was Bruce's desire to take assistant Eric Black with him as Birmingham argue this would leave nobody to run the team in the short-term.

The current City board were keen to offer Bruce a new five-year contract six months ago but Yeung, whose takeover is stalling, has failed to agree to the deal and left Bruce unsure that his contract, which only has 18 months left, will be extended.

For that reason Brady and club owners David Sullivan and David Gold have a moral dilemma.

How can they stop Bruce from leaving when their association with the club is expected to end ? It is why Bruce is keen to talk to Wigan about a return to a club he served briefly in 2001.

Whelan sees Bruce as the ideal replacement for Chris Hutchings.

He is not only prepared to compensate Birmingham for luring away their manager — for what would be a Premier League record — but is also prepared to reward Bruce handsomely with a seven-figure salary as well as a £1m bonus should topflight survival be achieved.

£3m  Like DW would EVER pay that

Whelan continuing his trip down memory lane with the smallest phone book in football. Bryan Hamilton, Ray Mathias and Bruce Rioch sitting by their phones if this falls through.
