You are uncrushing the file to the max drive instead of just copying it, yeah?

And now I have tried it.

At first, I was perturbed by a few things and these are they:

The ball does seem heavier and slower. The passing game feels sluggish at first, but we've been here before - this is exactly the way people felt about PES 5 at first. Sure enough, after playing for a couple of hours, the reasoning behind this becomes clear and the game HAS improved as a result.
The key is to keep the ball circulating - watch a match on TV and most passes are not zipped quickly into feet, they are rolled. Even more so than in PES 5, my buildup is now full of 1-2s between defenders and midfielders, anything to keep the ball moving and pull the opposition out of shape, because I can't simply zip it down the pitch at a million miles an hour and that is a GOOD THING. Also, you find that when the tempo of the game naturally accelerates, the passes do too. GOOD.

The referee is a lot different, and I'm not sure I like him. The niggly fouls of PES 5 could get annoying, but I found that they all but vanished once I got into the zone and my tackling became sharper. Last night, however, I was quite frequently penalised, even booked, for superb, clean sliding tackles. Maybe this is meant to reflect the crackdown on 'lunging' and the human error of the referee, but I didnae like it. I also quite liked being able to cynically bodycheck or clip the heels of an attacker if they looked like creating anything in PES 5, whereas I now have to risk a booking by sliding in if I want to be sure of a tactical foul.

Many have complained that a slide tackle frequently results in the attacker regaining possession, and here we've got to look once again at real life. In a nutshell - don't dive in. If you do it in the midst of a midfield battle, the key is then to win the second ball, and that's usually possible. If you do it to halt the run of an attacker, in space, towards your defence, then you're stupid, aren't you? So stop complaining so much about that one.

The way the keepers spill shots is quite annoying. I was deprived a victory by Dida punching one into his own net in my second match, and there were several near misses after that. However, once I'd settled in and started playing decent football, I found the problem subsided, simply because I was defending better and not allowing clear shots from the edge of my box so often. Again, if we look to real life we find that a shot from 18 yards, on target, is very often mishandled, but it is more often blocked or prevented, and that can be replicated in the game.

So all in all I think the game has improved, but a couple of things still bug me. I'm pretty sure, though, that I'll learn to deal with them or even see the merit in them, as with PES 5.

I think that, once I've fully adjusted and tightened up my defending, this game will play in an incredibly realistic way. For now, high scoring games are likely, because it's soooo much more important to get everyone in position and use the 2nd defender discerningly, but after a few weeks I can see it settling down nicely.

If the game continues to evolve this way, it can't be long before a 90 minute match option must be included. Several of my matches, towards the end of the session, featured such long spells of possession that there can only have been 3 or 4 meaningful chances to score. It was very, very lifelike to watch and ended up 2-1, but on another day I'd have expected 0-0. I think if I was able to sit down and play a full 90 minute match, at that tempo and quality, I might very well jizz into my underpants.

That was my initial reaction, I'm now jaded and old and harbouring some reservations. Bear in mind I have played exclusively on 'Top Player' mode in the interim.

- Goalkeeper fumbling is intensely annoying. I have played several matches against the computer and most have been settled by a very, very scrappy goal, usually a result of a fumble.

I said in my initial post that I thought they'd be less of a problem once I sorted out defending, and were merely an expression of the fact that you shouldn't be allowing the opposition clear shots at your goal from close range, and I stand by that. I think, though, that they've overdone it. I've seen some really tame headers, lobbed gently into the keeper's arms yet parried to their doom.

Replacing the litany of player control and first touch glitches in PES 5 (winger receiving the ball and spontaneously deviating 45 degrees out over the touchline, anyone?) are some wonderful new ones. The most annoying of these occurs when chasing a ball back towards the keeper under pressure. You have to sprint in order not to allow the striker a free run at goal, but when your defender touches the ball, anything can happen. Frequently, the ball bobbles loose for the striker to sidefoot home. X to pass back to the keeper doesn't seem to work well under these circumstances.

There's more, but I have to go and make coffee now. I'm still clinging to the idea that, after a few more weeks of teething, everything will click into place, but I'm feeling rather meh about the whole thing right now.

There's just quickly time to mention the fact that preventing wingers from walzing into acres of open space is even harder now, 2nd defender or no, and that slide tackles performed as a split-second reaction, very close to the ball, will frequently fly over the ball and take out the man. Considering the defender was inevitably positioned perfectly in order to be able to force the attacker into a move and react this way, this is fecking hard to stomach. These would've been perfect slide tackles in PES 5, and still should be.

Think I am in the same boat, right now I am feeling very underwhelmed as certain elements of the game just do not feel "right".

Frequently defending feels like pot luck and the play shifts from one end of the pitch to the other in the blink of an eye as players in general cannot defend , so their opponent when in possession is free to pass to a striker in 3/4 passes with no fear of an interception.

Also on too regular an occasion I cannot move towards a pass as my player is stuck on some imagery line without utilising the super cancel feature. And my ai team-mates seem to take an age to make any kind of forward run all too often for m,y liking, any run will do but instead they just stand there.

I think it's vital to win the first ball when defending. I always try to get my head to things early before an opponent has a chance to and then deal with the second ball later.

I can tell you now: shockingly negative. Expect 5-4-1.

not sure how much scope there is for tactical discussion regarding PES, but here goes anyway.

What formation are you playing, and how deep you dabble into individual/team instructions?

Personally I play a a 4-1-4-1 with wingers advanced to the furthers point in which the game still classes themselves as a midfielder. They also hug the touchline.

I find this gives more opportunities for ball retention, and allows for what have always my main two sources of goals in any PES game: wingers beating a man and pulling it back into the box and one twos between central midfielders and strikers.

There are problems though when in defence. We don't seem to hold our shape well at all, no matter what team mentality (L2+R1/R2) we are on, or how high the defensive line is set. CMs frequently end up covering in wide positions rather than staying central, whilst the DM plays too close to the CMs rather than getting into the gap between CMs and CBs (admittedly this is remedied slightly when I play the deepest defensive line, 'A' as it's called). Centre backs frequently don a cloak of utter smugness and burst out of central defence to close the ball down in central midfield, also. This is with their individual defence rating at high.

Any tips on how to remedy any of these situations? It may be a case that my players have a low defence rating and thus hold their position poorly. If not, anyone have any idea what the defence rating means or does?
