Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a BEAST of a new computer
Have got all my orchestral samples up and running on the latest version of Cubase, but they are slaughtering my PC to the point where it falls over - loading up chamber strings alone demands 620MB of RAM and trying to activate these samples with a keyboard takes aaages, where I need an instant response to play parts in.
So it looks like a new, amazingly fast and RAMalicious PC is on the agenda. Here it probably is:
The only thing I'm a little dodgy about is the graphics card. £369 is a lot and I don't think music software will exactly make too many demands on it, so will probably scale that down and save some cash.
Am absolutely sh!tting myself at the cost, but I should make my money back before too long. Working on a film and a documentary already, so might even pay it off by next Feb

Yup, if you're using it mainly for audio the gfx card is overkill. You'll be wanting a 64 bit OS too if you're throwing that much RAM in. XP still the best bet atm for audio apps as there are quite a few people having problems with stability on Vista.

Surely you'll need more storage than 300gb in total? Get yourself a WD Raptor for the primary HD and a bigger (500GB) for storage. Also the GTX is huge overkill - a 8800GT is only about 10% slower and half the price. I'd also get either a Q6600 CPU or wait for the Penryn ones to come out.
Vista64 essential too if you want 4GB RAM.

Ok they are both raptors - I just checked. You still need more storage though if you are handling video.

Never used either but I was under the impression that xp64 is more problematic than vista64 due to it being a kind of "test" for 64-bit computing.
tbh, with the money he's spending he might as well get both.
Also noticed no sound card? I assume you already have an uber-one ceefax? Looking at the specs again - do you really need to spend £174 on a case? The PSU looks like overkill too.

That looks like a great machine. For playing games.
I would think you would be far better off with a dual socket workstation, and you can get 8GB of memory for less than the price of that RAM, if you are as in need of memory as you say.
Just for a quick example:
Dell precision T5400 - 8x2.00GHz (I assume cubase is decently multithreaded), 2GB (4x512MB) RAM, 2x146GB SAS, 290 NVS (more than enough if this is for non-3d software) - £2,000
