Well I was thinking that would be an entire HDD more or less only for samples, and one for everything else. I have a 500GB external one for storing other big things like films and finished projects.

But yes, given how cheap HDDs are, it'd probably make sense just to have a vast one or two on board, and as fast as they come.
I have no idea why my techie friend stipulated such small HDDs.

I have to store all my crap on DVDs because I only have about 150Gb of HDD. Best to avoid that if possible.

True enough, but I bet you tend to have **** load of unfinished and in-progress stuff going on at the same time. That's the problem I have.

Well, I might as well just have a bohemoth on board the actual machine. They're pretty cheap aren't they? I just wonder why TechMan only put the smaller ones in... are big, fast ones prohibitively expensive?

Not as expensive as you may expect, no.
Unless you go for the designed-for-audio ones which are rediculously expensive.
