He uses Cubase though, which is PC only iirc? Logic is the better sequencer, but unless he knows how to use it it'll put him back months until he does.

Techie man says he can order all the parts from overclockers and dispense with the graphics card to bring the price down to £1912.72, which is encouraging. That probably still includes the snazzy case.
I'm slightly bewildered by all this techie advice but by all means keep it coming! I'm basically taking all this into account, challenging my guy with your suggestions, and emailing VSL and Steinberg to get the thoughts of their support people. Hopefully, within the next couple of days, I'll arrive at the best bang for my buck, though economy isn't my first priority. Being able to run massive, massive sample libraries reliably and quickly is.

It must be a PC by the way. I have too much invested in terms of software over the last few years for it not to be.

Well, it's always done the trick for me and I've never considered changing, though people keep telling me to. Having said that, I've never had to do anything as demanding as this before, so maybe its weaknesses will be exposed!
It's hard for me to comment on it really, as I've never used Pro Tools or Logic. It would seem like a pointless inconvenience to change now.

Lots of advice here on PC hardware for Cubase - there's even a guide to different bits and bobs and a big thread on using 4GB RAM.

Well it won't run if you don't have an Mbox/003 etc.

I realise I'm being a bit of a c**t by even suggesting anyone read those for my benefit, but they appear to give fairly comprehensive summaries of the system requirements of both Cubase and VSL. As these are pretty much the only programs I want to run on a daily, working basis, I think I need to digest this. Only one problem: I am a little bit of a techtard.
Am going to stay up for a while and try to wade through it all, see if I can come up with any meaningful conclusions.
