Lord of the Rings Online is meant to be quite good, or Everquest 2 maybe.

City of Heroes is quite fun, but I havn't played it in a long while now.

I've played EVEOnline before, and that's very good. If you ever played Elite when you were younger, DJ - it's very much like that. You have to pay monthly subs though, which is why I stopped. However, I think there's a free two-week trial available at the moment.

I've found Runescape. Not bad for a free game
