Bribery is a strong word.
As with any industry that relies on word of mouth/ reviews to garner interest, you have to paint what you're selling in a good light.
If that means doing something favourable for the journalist on the back of a good review then so be it.
I've often given cash out to smaller TV stations on the back of a chunky lunch or trip to a sporting event.

My general rule of thumb is that if there's loads of copies of it in the pre-owned section a month after release it's not worth having.

I tend to look at a handful of reviews, and see what the common themes are in all reviews. What do they all say are god/bad about the game. You cant take 1 reviewers score as at the end of the day its just their opinion. But if 4 or 5 reviewers are making the same points about a game, there must be something in it

I don't read reviews for the score, I read them to find out about features and potential glitches, bugs or poor design choices with the game.

It's more about reading between the lines and getting an overall impression of the game than anything else.
