It was announced that the number of teams at the next WC will stay at 20. However there will be changes in the number of automatic qualifiers meaning Ireland and Wales although didn't get out of their groups will automatically qualify along with Tonga and all the quarter finalists.

Next Tri-Nations negotiation is 2010 i think, but i doubt Argies will have a fully fledged professional setup with all their top names by then, so its looking like 2012 at the earliest for the Argies in Tri Nations, they'll need to look at one or maybe two teams to jump in the super 14 as well.

On another note, 126th Varsity Match next Thursday. New day new time and Joe Roffs last ever game.

Oh I'd forgotten this was on, cheers Gregg. I nearly watched Birmingham Spurs there...

How did they have three players binned? Referee actually using yellow cards for what they were intended for for once?

First bit almost there. Argies told to shove their application to enter the Six Nations. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Not quite that simple.

The IRB have advised they cannot join the Six Nations competition because it is intended for European teams.

They've agreed with the Argentinians to help them develop the professional structure in the country to the extent where the players are mainly based in Argentina and then allow them entry into the Tri-Nations. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Which is an incredible cop out.

Not really, it was the most realistic option available.

A place amongst the Northern Hemisphere elite really isn't realistic and would only be a short term solution. Players are here right now, what happens when that dries up, would be pointless them staying there.

They have to leave it to SANZAR to allow them into the Tri-Nations. What the IRB have essentially said is that, that is where they should be playing and that they will do everything in their power to ensure that SANZAR have no complaints or legitimate arguments at all to refuse their inclusion.

Everything in their power The IRB is a ridiculous organisation that rarely mkes the right decision for development of smaller rugby nations, as shown by the decision to award the World Cup to NZ rather than Japan. Them claiming they'll do everything in their power means precisely zero. It'll be four years at the earliest before they might even be let into the tri-nations, if that happens at all (to which I remain sceptical), by then all momentum would have been lost. Completely unsurprised by the decision, follows the exact pattern I thought it would do, as it'll end with Sanzar saying no and them and the IRB bickering ad infinitum.
