It has been running Vista fine, no problems, etc since I bought it in January. Anyway, yesterday afternoon I left my daughter watching her DVD on it and when I get back to it the whole thing has crashed. Reboot it, only to find it doesn't recognise the hard drive. I then ran a couple of Vista repair tests, which informed me I have no hard drive.
Obviously there is one. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Have I lost everything on my laptop if the hard drive is dead, or is some of it retreivable? I wouldn't be too bothered, but I had only recently downloaded 300-odd holiday pics of my daughter.
even if the hd is broken it should still recognise it. I would recommended opening it up and checking the connection but that might ruin the manufacturers warranty
When I boot up and get past the Asus screen I get a message saying something along the lines of 'Please set boot device and reboot.' Not recognising the fact that there is a hard drive there.
I am hoping it is a simple case of a loose connection but I don't know.

If you open it up you could well void the warranty as most laptops i've opened seem to have some sort of "Don't break this seal or you're buggered" sticker. However, it can't hurt to take a look and if it is a connection you'll notice pretty quickly.
Aside from that, you're best taking it back to the shop you bought it from and giving them hell.
