I'm a little confused here. do you choose your charity after you've been accepted by the london marathon organisers?

and I might apply for the ballot, but I really cba doing loads of fundraising again.
Then again I might just not bother.

No, that was to apply through the general ballot. They were just giving you a list of charities you might want to run for if you get accepted.
You can go through charities seperately to try and get in if you want. But you need to guarantee raising a certain amount of funds.

the online ballot lets you know if you're successful on the 30th november, then you have 10 days to pay.
