Yup. Another one of those promises by Bethesda that weren't kept. It's just as in Morrowind, with the psychic guards. Supposedly when you commit a crime, any witnesses would have to get near a guard and yell so they come for you. But most of the time it doesn't work. Not sure if its a bug or a poorly implemented feature.
Do get the 'No Psychic Guards' mod, though. Works quite well. Also the 'Bounty Reduction Over Time' mod. I use the 'Attack and Hide' mod, too, sometimes taking advantage of it; with a nice Stealth level you can have some fun.
It's nowhere near the awesomeness of the Thief series, but it's much improved over regular Oblivion.

I’ve got the 360 version so don’t have any of your cheating mods (and wouldn’t use them anyway).

It was the same in Morrowind so I assume it’s a feature rather than a bug. I just don’t like it how you can steal something in one town then travel for five days to a town ten miles and get arrested for stealing.

It was a feature in Morrowind. It was a poor design choice (something Bethesda is famous for, actually). They said they'd make it different for Oblivion. They made it worse - there's really no point in robbing shops for example, they have almost no stuff available, the magic stuff isn't physically there.

About the cheat mods, well, no, these aren't like that at all. They add functionality that Bethesda chose not to.
No Psychic Guards, basically what it does is if you attack someone in their home, no guards teleport. They only come if one happened to be so close as to actually hear the victim yell. Among other things, that makes it a bit more realistic.
Bounty Reduction Over Time is exactly that, based on the actual amount of the bounty, it decreases over real-time play, you can't just rest and it goes away. Eventually guards won't be looking for you (could take up to a couple of hours). Again, makes more sense as it looks like you're not the only criminal in the world so they're always hunting you 24/7.
Attack and Hide is based on scripts that makes enemies not automatically know where you are all the time after you've attacked them. You can sneak, shoot an arrow, go hide... they'll come looking for you, but if they don't find you, eventually they'll leave you be and you can come back for more.

Another annoyance I found is the pointlessness of resisting arrest.

I was at some guys shop and went upstairs for a rummage around and stole a few items. As soon as I left the room a guard appeared out of nowhere to arrest me. I resisted arrest and ran back into the room where he followed me so I killed him. When he died I received a message saying it was witnessed by forces unknown and as soon as I left the store more guards came after me.

It seems pointless committing certain crimes unnoticed if you can’t get away with them even if you’re undetected.

The forces unknown are the dark brotherhood. awesome guild to be in :cool:

Was in the sewers for ages. Can see why people get stuck in the game easily despite the "do whatever you want thing" (er, maybe I was dim but there is only one way of the sewers? hence I didn't really have a choice of what I am doing) and people mocking people getting stuck.

Right so I got out of the sewers and read all the things the game tells you. Including the one about if you look normal and don't go around with your weapons drawn then people will like you. So theres a city right infront of the where you get out of the swers. Walk into the city in my normal cloths and try to be friendly.
Promptly die as everyone starts attacking me.

Load up game again and this time go in the other direction. As its night time I really can't see where the heck I'm going (even with a torch) and so fall down a big cliff.
Get stuck some more just aimlessly wandering around in the pitch dark.
Tried to do that waiting thing, was informed I can't because enimies are near by. I can't even see 2 yards in front of me so not sure how I knew people were nearby, but apparently they are.

Eventually found the big city, everywhere was closed.

i agree about it being too dark in places though, with the slightest amount of light on ym screen i cant see where im going caus at times its really dark, so i have to stand up infront of my tv and act as a alight shield so i xcan just about make out where im going damn blinds

Like I said in the other thread Fran – your crimes will follow you no matter where you go. When I started the game my fist action was to pickpocket one of the guards and when I left the sewers and arrived at the town I was arrested.

Plus if you resist arrest everyone will attack you regardless of whether they’re guards or not.

Are they attacking me because I was in prision when the game starts?
