| How is there a lack of quality? Look at the Czechs, they topped our group without many top drawer, world class players. We've got Keane, Given, Finnan, Dunne, Doyle and Duff. Easily quality to qualify for a World Cup if we had a real manager in charge.

Let's see, there's Bobby Robson (senile 70-odd year old Brit who once put forward Terry Venables for the Barcelona job), Don Howe (brutal 70-odd year old Brit who once worked as Terry Venables' assistant) and David Pleat (awful 70-odd year old Brit, who was an ex-Director at Terry Venables' ex-club, Tottenham Hotspur). Now will these lithe, experts of the modern international game, have a look at the interest of an international manager such as Haan or Hodgson, or will they suggest their old pal TV gets the job as they've seen him knocking about commentary studios recently? Seriously, could Bobby Robson name 5 managers nowadays?
| Haha, brilliant. And I suppose they'll be having a seance with Alf Ramsey and Herbert Chapman. ffs

28 November 2007 El Tel must wait for the call
By Liam Mackey
HE IS still the clear favourite to get the job but Terry Venables will have to wait if he is to get the green light to become the next manager of the Republic of Ireland.
The FAI’s Board of Management met in Dublin last night and confirmed that they would be proceeding with the management recruitment process as was originally envisaged.
That means that board members must first meet with the panel of headhunters who will conduct interviews with candidates for the post.
The names of the headhunters are still being finalised but there are suggestions that the three man panel could be made up of Don Howe, Don Givens and Andy Townsend, the latter having reportedly ruled himself out of a role in any future management set-up.
Bobby Robson, who has been assisting the FAI in their preliminary soundings about the new manager, will definitely not be part of the recruitment panel.
Meanwhile, amid speculation on Teeside that Venables would be on Middlesbrough’s wanted list should current boss Gareth Southgate fall on his sword in the short term, there is also a strong suggestion that, if he does get the Irish job, Venables would like former Irish striker David Kelly – until this week Billy Davies’ number two at Derby – at his side.
The four members of the FAI Board who will meet shortly with the panel to discuss the next moves are President David Blood, Honorary Secretary Michael Cody, Honorary Treasurer Eddie Murray and Chief Executive John Delaney.
After last night’s meeting at their new headquarters in Abbotstown, the FAI issued the following statement:
“A report was given on the process to select a new manager for the senior international team and the ten members of the Board unanimously agreed that progress to date is positive.
“It was agreed that the process be moved forward by meeting with the proposed members of the panel drawn up to assist with the recruitment. The purpose of this meeting will be to outline the conditions and terms of reference for the new senior international team manager and answer any questions the people involved in the selection process may have.
“While the Board considers it preferable to have a new manager in place before the February friendly with Brazil it will be emphasised to the recruitment panel that making the best possible appointment is the priority for Irish football.”
FAI sources last night categorically denied reports that John Delaney had met with Gerald Houllier in Durban during the World Cup draw. “Nor has he spoken to Terry Venables – and he has no intention of speaking to Terry Venables,” added the source.
Along with Venables, Houllier, Roy Hodgson, Liam Brady, Graeme Souness and others still believed to be in the running for the Irish job, Dutch 70s football legend Arie Haan yesterday became the latest candidate to throw his hat into the ring, saying he would “love to get involved”.
Haan has extensive club management experience in Europe and also spent two years as coach of the Chinese national team, leading them to the final of the 2004 Aisa Cup.
Earlier this year, and just six months into a two year contract, he quit his post of coach with Cameroon, citing interference from the President of the Cameroon Football Federation.
In a statement issued yesterday through his agent, Haan said: “The Irish team has some talented players, such as Robbie Keane and Stephen Ireland, and the lads have a great fighting spirit which I always admired when playing against them. The team has great potential and I’d love to get involved.”
To judge by his remarks, in the unlikely event that he does end up as Irish manager, Haan’s first order of business would have to involve talking to a certain Manchester City midfielder about his international intentions.

The Finnish FA has announced that Hodgson will not continue as manager of our national team. So he's probably off to Australia then.

He was making 'come hither' eyes at the England job yesterday (he's probably about the most viable English-born candidate out there tbf).

| Actually it isn't any more. Delaney has secured Bobby Robson (old friend of El Tel, recommended him for Barca job) and Don Howe (old friend of El Tel, worked as his assistant manager). Don Pleat is no longer on board, so Delaney is using Don Givens (played under El Tel at QPR) it seems temporarily, having failed to lure Andy Townsend (colleague of El Tel's at ITV) to the role. My guess is Townsend turned that down in the hope that he gets offered a role as an assistant (!) and wants to look impartial.
Mon Hodgson, Haan, O'Leary, or anyone who isn't this laughing idiot |
