Default BBC Sports Personality of the Year award 2007

Ten contenders have been named on the shortlist for the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

A public phone vote will decide the winner during a star-studded show on Sunday 9 December.

The programme, shown on BBC One from 1900 GMT, comes live from the NEC in Birmingham.

Sports Personality contenders

Joe Calzaghe

Age: 35 Nationality: Welsh
Sport: Boxing

2007 highlight: Becoming undisputed world champion

A world champion for 10 years, Calzaghe has won all 44 of his professional fights.

The super-middleweight saw off Peter Manfredo in April - and then reached another level to beat Denmark's Mikkel Kessler seven months later.

That victory, making him the undisputed champion, was saluted by a 50,000 crowd at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Lewis Hamilton

Age: 22 Nationality: English
Sport: Formula One

2007 highlight: World title
runner-up in rookie season

The most successful debutant in Formula One history, he went from virtual unknown to international star in just a few months.

Hamilton made the podium 12 times, including four Grand Prix victories, in his rookie season at the top level.

Having led the championship since mid-May, Hamilton just missed out on the title in the final race and lost out by a point to Kimi Raikkonen.

Ricky Hatton

Age: 29 Nationality: English
Sport: Boxing

2007 highlight: Las Vegas showdown v Floyd Mayweather

Hatton is preparing for the biggest fight of his career on the eve of the Sports Personality award.

Down-to-earth Hatton beat Mexican Jose Luis Castillo in June.

Now the Manchester Hitman takes on Floyd Mayweather, considered by some experts to be the world's best pound-for-pound boxer.

His fights in the early hours UK time of Sunday 9 December.

Andy Murray

Age: 20 Nationality: Scottish
Sport: Tennis

2007 highlight: Breaking into the world top 10

The young Scot looks a surefire Grand Slam star of the future.

Three years ago, he picked up the Young Sports Personality award.

In 2007, a wrist injury ruled him out of the sport for three months, and he missed Wimbledon.

But he still managed to win titles in San Jose and St Petersburg and starred in Britain's Davis Cup resurgence.

Christine Ohuruogu

Age: 23 Nationality: English
Sport: Athletics

2007 highlight: World 400m champion

A gold medal winner against the odds, she claimed a shock triumph after returning from a suspension for missing three drugs tests.

Her 400m world athletics win in Japan was only her fifth race in 13 months. She clocked a personal best of 49.61 seconds - 24 days after completing a one-year ban.

The Londoner was the first British woman to win a world track gold since Sally Gunnell in 1993.

Paula Radcliffe

Age: 33 Nationality: English
Sport: Athletics

2007 highlight: Mother of all wins

Just 10 months after a marathon 27-hour labour, new mum Radcliffe was a winner over 26 miles against some of the world's best athletes.

Radcliffe gave birth to daughter Isla in January, and won the New York Marathon in October.

She kept repeating the phrase "I love you Isla" to keep her rhythm in the gruelling closing stages.

The 2002 Sports Personality bids for Olympic gold at Beijing in 2008.

Jason Robinson

Age: 33 Nationality: English
Sport: Rugby union

2007 highlight: Helping England to Rugby World Cup final

Robinson dazzled as defending champions England reached the World Cup final for the second tournament running.

After announcing plans to retire, he had the honour of leading the side out when winning his 50th cap in the semi-final against France.

England went down 15-6 to South Africa in the final, but Robinson can look back on a fine career in both rugby league and union.

Justin Rose

Age: 27 Nationality: English
Sport: Golf

2007 highlight: European Order of Merit winner

Rose was on the rise in 2007, leaping to seventh in the world.

He finished in the top 12 in each of the majors, including fifth spot at the Masters.

The English golfer won two Tour titles and secured the European Order of Merit honour.

He overcame illness to claim victory in the Volvo Masters, the last event of the season.

James Toseland

Age: 27 Nationality: English
Sport: Motorcycling

2007 highlight: Second World Superbikes title

Toseland showed he loves life in the fast lane as he regained the World Superbikes title.

Reaching speeds of up to 200 miles an hour - he set the pace from the start in the 15 round championship.

The Honda rider won a race in each of the first five meetings, and treated home fans to a first career double at Brands Hatch.

After his second championship win, he moves to Moto GP in 2008.

Jonny Wilkinson

Age: 27 Nationality: English
Sport: Rugby union

2007 highlight: Helping England to Rugby World Cup final.

England's kicking king returned from a personal injury nightmare to help revive his team.

Wilkinson's Six Nations return in February was his first international action for more than 1,000 days.

It was the springboard for a tough campaign as England defended the Rugby World Cup.

He was a key figure in the wins over Australia and France, before defeat to South Africa in the final.

I'd like Calzaghe or Hatton to win.

OMGZ, at this rate the Sports Personality of the Year award is in danger of just becoming a meaningless popularity contest!

Oh wait.

I want it to be Hatton when he destroys Mayweather on Saturday night, but boxing is so much less publicised than F1. Won't mind seeing Lewis win it but there's noone else who is going to after all the media hype he's received. Even those who don't follow F1 at all have seen his mug on the front of sport supplements and on the back of newspapers.
