Middlesbrough have confirmed that they have opened talks to seal the signing of Egyptian international Mohamed Shawky.
The Al-Ahly midfielder has been training with Boro over the past few days, along with team-mate Emad Moteab.
Boro boss Gareth Southgate has decided against a move for striker Moteab - but he has been impressed enough by Shawky to take a chance on him.
Egyptian double
"We had both players watched and felt one would be a good addition," said Southgate.
"He's one we might well add to the squad. We're still in talks with him and his club finalising the deal.
"We're not there yet but we hope to have it tied up in the next couple of days."
Recent Riverside arrival Mido was full of praise for his international team-mates and he will no doubt be delighted to learn of Shawky's imminent arrival.
The 25-year-old has already undergone a medical and is expected to seal his move subject to a work permit before the transfer window closes on Friday.

Was there tonight, im getting ticked with nob ends expecting us to thrash teams who come here and set out a defensive stall. They had a tank up front and it was always going to be a phyiscal battle.
People dont take into account that we had what, 8 acadamy grads in the side, 7 if you take out downing.
Even with the experience of the others that still a big stap as people like Hines, Wheater and AJ aint played a lot of competetive football.
Im happy with the result, i thought we could have been tighter defensivly. But its a bananna skin well dodged.

well O'Neil could be a quality signing, though the injury thing is worrying. Hopefully will solve our right sided problem but is he really that much better than James Morrison?
Shawky - who knows, but worth a gamble at £650k and at least should be mates for Mido.
Euell - bye.
Yak - what an utter twat. Has basically said he couldnt be arse for the last 6 months which is a total disgrace. However, it could equally be him making excuses for being *****.
As for Wednesday, I'm happy, we did what we needed to do.
I'm bloody missing tomorrow (other half's Aunties 60th - what a ***** reason) so we'll no doubt win 4-0
