Meanwhile, teenager winger Adam Johnson has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal which will keep him at the Riverside until 2010.
Boss Gareth Southgate told the Gazette: "I'm pleased that we've managed to ensure Adam will stay with us for at least the next four years.
"He has shown already, when playing for the reserves and the first team, that he's got great potential.
"Now it's for us to try to develop that potential and for Adam to display the desire to push on and become a regular first team player."
Southgate is also believed to have made significant progress in his bid for Steed Malbranque.
Boro have been in talks with Fulham over the £4m rated French midfielder and hope to quickly agree a fee and get him to Teesside for a visit to the impressive training facilities and to talk personal terms.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink officially becomes a free agent at midnight tonight and is not expected to be renewing his links with the club.

Reports are linking Downing with a move to Spurs, again. £8m. Although it seems like it's lazy journalism since it says we have to sell before we can buy which completely contradicts what Southgate said last week.
We are also being linked with Roland Kollmann. Scored against us two years ago. Don't know much about him but if we do make a move for him it seems likely that Jimmy is on his way out.

yeah, the sell before we can buy thing is ********.
I can see Downing to Spurs almost being logical, he doesn't have the best relationship with the fans, Spurs like signing young english players, Spurs are in Europe, Johnson's just signed a new contract.
But the rumours are probably just based on stuff like that rather than any real evidence.
We've been linked with Kollman loads of times, he played with Pogo for Graz didn't he? Can't see it happenning now.
