Mario Sunshine was more like Luigi's Mansion for me, I don't really consider it to be a typical Mario, though it was actually a lot of fun

I have heard comparisons between The three main Mario games from the 2D era and the 3D on various boards /podcasts and I must say I pretty much agree with them.
Super Mario Brothers is Super Mario 64:
Both games were revolutionary for platform games. They introduced elements never seen before in their type of games and were the benchmark for the games that followed.
Super Mario 2 (USA/EUR) is Super Mario Sunshine:
Both these games took the established rules of the game stripped away features whilst adding new strange ones that change the game play mechanics.
Super Mario 3 is Super Mario Galaxy:
Both these games went back to the core game play elements and expanded upon them to create a far better game. In the case of Mario 3 it kept the basic game play mechanics of SMB and added new power ups and items, whilst also splitting the game world into little bite size levels. Mario Galaxy does the same thing, keeping the basic mechanics and adding new features on top.
Wow long post, hope that all makes sense </BLOCKQUOTE>
I can't wait for the 3D game that is like Super Mario World then. SMW is my favorite of the 2D Mario's and was my favorite in the entire series until I got Galaxy this week.
