OK,so I think my mate has become mentally/emotionally instabe or even paranoid...
Basically he gave up cigarettes at the start of the semester and at first I noticed a huge change, for the good, in his personality,I'm talking about actually working hard in college and having a generally better personality towards others.
However over the last few weeks or so I've noticed him become more confrontational towards his friends and has let even minor things effect him.I've even witnessed him break down twice in two consecutive weekends, something which I've never seen him do over the 17 years that I've known him.Hell,he has even become more religious, when even a few months ago he was almost atheist in his religious outlook.
I'm just getting worried about his mental state,as is all those close to him.I'm afraid to confront him over it as the last friend who tried to do so ended up nearly fighting with him.

If he's keeping off of it then fair enough. He might need to hit some kind of rock bottom to move on. But I guess the real question could be if he's replaced cigarettes with something else but I have no idea.

Not being much of a shrink I can't really give you any help on this, but you should assume that his anger is manifesting due to a worry that he is not addressing.

If there is something else on his mind I can't pin-point it.Although I have realised that he has become much more interested in getting moe involved in the local GAA club and even wanted both of us to manage a team.In fact this is one of the times when he broke-down-when I told him that nominations were closed for team managers he began ranting and raving and just broke down in front of me.I thought it kind of weird to react in such away to such a mundane thing....

people are too quick to get involved, just let people live their life.
Fair enough I know what your trying to say.But what if worse came to worse and he was depressed and committed suicide?Surely then I would feel responsible for not getting involved.
