I had a go at applying for some finance-related jobs in my final year but didn't get anywhere, mainly because I was on a 2:2 at the time. Decided in around January to just focus on my degree, worked my arse off and ended up with a 2:1 (maths at warwick). Applied for lots of jobs after that and ended up taking one of the first ones I applied for (setting odds for football matches). They were looking for someone with a 2:1 in a numeracy related degree. I hope to go into finance when I'm around twenty-five, not sure whether or not the degree classification will be relevant then, but I'd like to think it will be.
Where did you find this job setting odds advertised ? I'm in my last year of a maths degree and this sounds like a job I would love.
depends on how much you want to work, how much you want to earn, whether you're after front office, middle office or back office in a bank, where you ultimately want to see your career going etc etc.
Accountancy = Not working overly hard, earning decent pay for your first three years and good pay after that with the potential of amazing pay ultimately.
Back/Middle Office banking = Working hard for a good salary from the off. Pay goes up but unless you're amazing accountancy at the big 4 will probably outstrip it ultimately. And you can enter middle office banking from accountancy with your qualification for a very good salary.
Front office banking = Very hard to get into, very hard work (12hrs+ a day), amazing pay.
also, an internship in banking probably wouldn't hinder your chances of getting a graduate job with one of the big four later if you decided banking wasn't for you. Would help if anything.
You'll really need a 2:1 for Accountancy. I got a 2:2, but from a decent uni and I got 3 As at A-level. I applied at loads of medium sized firms even though 90% insist on 2:1s and hopefully I'll have a job offer in a fortnight from now. Otherwise, you could try the small firms who only recruit 1 or 2 grads a year, if that, but you could be look at getting only 12k a year for the privilage.
And get applying as soon as. The "So why didn't you apply this time last year?" crops up all the time.
Got a 2:1 in Business Studies but have now bizarrely ended up building a career in local government. Its not exactly what I planned initially but happy with how its going so far
I have a 2:1 in Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
I did a year work placement and ended up taking a further year out and doing a two year placement. They offered me a job before going back for my final year for when I completed my degree.
Basically my job involves writing databases, to produce statistics on telephone networks as well as database integration from various systems.. Can get a bit mundane. But where I work everyone is rather nice and cool and I've made so many friends there. I could probably easily leave and get an extra 30-40% on top of what I earn currently.
However, its easy to get to, leave home at 8:40, at my desk by 9.
I listen to music all day. We have a staff room with a pool table, Wii, table tennis table amonst other things
Work pay for our weekly 5-aside, as well as a monthly outing to whatever we want. Go-carting, laser quest etc, etc.
They've also introduced a budget to pay for further education. So I may look into doing a Masters at Open Univeristy, if thats possible.
