Doesn't half take a while to give all your athlete specialities.

You start with 44 athletes because there are 44 events at a competition ie 1 per event.
Even if they finish last they get 1pt towards the team.
If you haven't enough athletes it means athletes doing more than one event at a competition which has a negative impact on their moral/fitness/training etc

Depending on how many you have fired you should be able to replace them fairly quickly with rubbish from either the transfer list or your youth squad so not all lost.
