Gary McAllister has made two changes to the side for the match against Burnley at Turf Moor.

David Pipe is back in the starting line-up and replaces Brian Kerr on the right-hand side.

Fabien Debec also comes back in, replacing Morten Hyldgaard in goal who has a slight thigh strain.

There is a place for Gary McSheffrey on the substitutes bench but Macca is sticking with Mills and Hignett up front for the second games in succession.

Coventry: Debec; Gordon; Konjic; Partridge; Hignett; McAllister; Mills; Safri; Caldwell; Davenport; Pipe. Subs: Montgomery; Shaw; Eustace; Chippo; McSheffrey

Burnley: Beresford; West; Davis; Little; Taylor; Grant; Branch; Weller; Briscoe; Gnohere; Blake. Subs: Cook; Moore; Maylett; Moore; Papadopoulos

Full-time: Burnley 3 Coventry 1
09 Nov 2002 16:54

Coventry leave Turf Moor with nothing after a spirited second half fightback with ten men brought them back into the match, before a late deflected effort sealed the points for Burnley.

The Sky Blues started brightly against a Burnley side no doubt brimming with confidence following Wednesday nights’ Worthington Cup win against Spurs.

Macca has repeatedly said how the Sky Blues will stick with the passing game he has introduced and that was apparent in the opening exchanges.

There is no doubt the City boss wants to play attractive football and the passing was again accurate and crisp. After three minutes the ball came out wide to Pipe on the right wing who put in a good low cross which Burnley keeper Beresford did well to cut out as Davenport was lurking just behind.

City had not made quite as frantic a start as on Wednesday but were again looking the better of the two teams. On five minutes Glen Little showed the skill responsible for that second-half comeback against Tottenham as he ran at the City defenders but Dean Gordon got a good block in.

Two minutes later and another slick move resulted in a half chance for Hignett who fired his shot in from a wide angle, which Beresford pushed around the post. Just afterwards some brilliant work by Gordon down the wing set Hignett up once again on the edge of the box and this time he produced a lovely curling effort which Beresford just got his fingertips to, to push it against the post and behind for a corner.

City had not had many clearcut chances but were unfortunate not to be ahead. On 13 minutes Robbie Blake had a good opportunity as the Sky Blues’ defence opened up in front of him but his shot from the edge of the box went harmlessly wide.

Two minutes later and the same man had an even better chance from the penalty spot. Macca conceded possession in a dangerous area and Little cut inside the area, only to brought down by Gordon who had stuck out his leg. The referee had no doubt about the penalty and Blake made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Coventry found themselves a goal behind after dominating the opening 15 minutes but for the next 10 minutes looked capable of getting back into the match. Konjic got a good header in from a deep Macca corner on 20 minutes before Hignett showed great determination to win the ball before playing a superb long ball up for Mills.

Unfortunately the big man could not control the ball and Burnley cleared. Just afterwards Hignett did well down the right wing to break quickly and he played an excellent early cross which on this occasion was just too far for Mills.

On the half-hour the Sky Blues had claims for a penalty waved away. Partridge cut in from the left and West stuck his leg out in a similar incident to the one where Little went down for Burnley’s penalty, but this time referee Mike Jones waved away the appeals.

By this stage the Clarets were getting stronger and on 35 minutes they went two clear. Tony Grant caught the defence napping and sped into the area before evading two last ditch challenges from City men. He calmly slotted the ball past Debec to bring the Burnley fans to their feet and put City further behind.

As if that wasn’t tough enough, three minutes after the goal referee Mike Jones gave Craig Hignett a straight red card for dissent. He was originally going to brandish a yellow but changed his mind and sent the ex-Burnley man off. It brought huge cheers from the supporters who had booed the striker’s every touch.

As if a two-goal deficit was not enough to come back from City would now have to play the entire second period with ten men.

Unsurprisingly two changes were made at the start of the second period with McSheffrey replacing Mills and Chippo on for Caldwell. The Sky Blues were now playing with three in defence as they looked to salvage something from the match and they certainly looked determined to give it a go. City’s wingers were seeing a lot of the ball, and Pipe in particular was industrious down the right flank.

On 56 minutes he showed sublime skill to beat the Burnley full-back and set off towards goal. He cut inside the area and was crudely tackled from behind but again the referee saw nothing wrong with a challenge that left the young City man in a great deal of pain.

For the first 20 minutes of the second half it was mostly Coventry as Burnley struggled to take advantage of the extra man and on 65 minutes they got what they deserved. Macca played a good ball to Davenport in an advanced position and the young central defender showed he has a good attacking brain as he knocked the ball past two defenders and was fouled by Graham Branch.

The referee awarded the spot kick and Macca calmly slotted it home to put City back in the match. It was thoroughly deserved because apart from the penalty and one defensive mishap the City goal had gone largely unthreatened.

With 72 minutes on the clock Gary McSheffrey produced a wonderful moment which should have brought the Sky Blues level. He picked the ball up wide on the left and cut into the area at great speed, weaving past the Burnley defenders. He had done all the hard work and when through on goal lost his composure and ballooned his effort well over from about 10 yards out.

It was a disappointing end to a great run but showed City’s intent to get something from the game. With 15 minutes to go Macca played McSheffrey through again and he hit it first time, but it just went wide of the post into the side netting.

City continued to press and with 10 minutes to go Eustace came on for Safri but Coventry were struggling to create chances after an extremely hard-working performance.

With four minutes to go it became apparent it was not going to be City’s day when Burnley scored a fortunate third to finish the match. Gareth Taylor ran at Davenport and his cross took a massive deflection of the City defender and looped past a helpless Debec.

It was a cruel blow after City had dominated the second half minus a player and they deserved to take something from the tie. A late McAllister free-kick was easily saved and Coventry will look back on a couple of first half incidents which changed this game.

A few mistakes there:
1 - Soccer SUNDAY
2 - Gary MCALLISTER
3 - twelve YARDS.

youre right though, it didn't make much sense. Did Macca ever miss a penalty for us?

Monksie's View - Ref Denies Unlucky City

By Kev Monks
Date: 10/11/2002

Burnley 3 Coventry City 1 Well the matches keep coming and it was back to league action with a trip up north to the dark satanic mills of Burnley. This was one of the most stormiest games, I have witnessed in years and was a match full of incidents, poor refereeing and crowd incitement.

Gary McSheffrey came back into the squad replacing the injured Jay Bothroyd. The reason for the highly popular Coventry kid not playing appears to be nothing more than for tactical reasons. Gary McAllister has been employing a 4-5-1 formation, which McSheffrey can't play and has opted for more defensively minded players.

The reason for him using Joachim in the Rotherham game as a sub, was purely to get the injury prone Leicester reject into the shop window, so he can be off loaded come January. Any rumours about McSheffrey leaving or being involved in something he shouldn't be, are like the Worthington Cup defeat a load of crap and should be ignored.

Also back in the side was Fabien Debec and David Pipe and a 4-4-2 formation. Things looked quite promising when David Pipe forced a third minute corner with Craig Hignett forcing another corner in the sixth minute.

Then Dean Gordon made an attacking run and found Lee Mills with a good pass. However, Mills could not give the shot the direction he wanted and Marlon Beresford managed to save the chance.

The home side had done little but in the 14th minute, they took the lead. Gary McAllister lost the ball, it was fed out to Glen Little and just as the former Fulham and Glentoran striker was about to shoot, in came Dean Gordon who took the ball and Little.

My immediate reaction was that it was a penalty and the referee agreed. However, some of the 1100 City supporters disagreed with it. Up stepped Blake who gave Debec no chance from 12 yards.

Unlike at Palace, City kept plugging away and Lee Mills should have scored when he headed a 19th minute corner over the bar and then two minutes later, however he was dispossessed by Arthur Gnohere.
In the 28th minute,

The noisy City fans were fuming when Richie Partridge did well to get into the penalty area before being sent crashing to the floor by a challenge from Glen Little. However, referee Mr Jones waved away the protests.

Two minutes later, Partridge became the first caution of the afternoon when Dean Gordon fouled Glen Little and the Liverpool loanee dared to complain that the referee had given a free kick when he had not done anything when he had been fouled.

Glen Little was causing the City defence a number of problems and Craig Hignett was given a stern lecture when he brought down the Burnley winger.

In the 34th minute, Burnley, who had beaten Spurs in the Worthington Cup and were rewarded with a home tie against Manchester United, went further ahead.

Throughout the game, City had been guilty of giving the ball away far too often and Mo Konjic's header only went as far as Tony Grant who shrugged off a couple of challenges before slotting the ball low past Debec from an acute angle.

If being two goals behind, but being the better team was not bad enough, things got worse when Craig Hignett was sent off for dissent in the 36th minute after complaining about an offside decision. The referee initially booked him, but then changed his mind and sent him off.

Much to the annoyance of some, Hignett was clapped off the pitch and duly acknowledged the applause. However, the more people I chatted to at the interval, the clearer it became that the City faithful were feeling that Hignett being sent off had cost us any chance of a victory.

At the end of the aforementioned interval, Gary McSheffrey and Youssef Chippo were introduced to the action in place of Lee Mills and Gary Caldwell and City played three at the back with Davenport pushing up and Gary McAllister partnering McSheffrey in attack.

Hignett got changed and as he could not take his place in Burnley's rather dilapidated Main Stand, due to still being on the books of Blackburn Rovers, he went into the away end. For those who don't know, the Premier League club are Burnley's rivals and their hatred of the Ewood Park side borders on the xenophobic.

However, the former Crewe, Barnsley and Middlesbrough midfielder lasted less than ten minutes amongst the ranks of the City supporters. A number of opinions were voiced and although he tried to defend himself, he was taken by stewards to the sanctuary of the dressing room.

In the 55th minute, the City supporters were close to exploding point when Graham Branch took down David Pipe with a hefty whack to the Welshman's ankle just inside the penalty area, right in front of the City fans. Mr Jones bizarrely signalled a throw-in and then allowed City physio Stuart Collie to treat the injury to Pipe.

Calum Davenport was making some telling runs down the right flank and it was one of these runs that led to the Sky Blues reducing the arrears in the 65th minute. Davenport had got into the same position that Pipe had ten minutes earlier. Branch dived in and clipped the ankles of the City youngster. This time, the referee decided that it was indeed a penalty. Gary McAllister stepped up and sent Marlon Beresford the wrong way.

As Beresford was picking the ball out of the net, he made an obscene gesture to the City fans who launched into a loud chorus of "Tom Hark" in mocking to the home club who played this ditty when Burnley score a goal.

A handful of City followers took exception to this gesture and remonstrated with the police, who told them to put in a complaint, whilst Beresford pointed to one supporter and demanded his ejection from the stadium.

In the 72nd minute, City came very close to levelling the game when Gary McSheffrey burst through the home defence, he only had Beresford to beat but he blasted over the bar and the look on his face said that he had wasted a glorious chance.

Three minutes later, McSheffrey nearly scored again when he was set free on the right by his manager, however, McSheffrey drilled his shot the wrong side of the post.

John Eustace was thrown on with eleven minutes left replacing Youssef Safri and just as it looked, that City might be on the verge of snatching a fair reward for their efforts, Burnley scored again.

Gareth Taylor used the man advantage to get down the left flank. He hit a speculative shot which deflected off Calum Davenport and sailed over Debec into the goal with four minutes to go.

Again words were exchanged with Beresford who once more demanded the ejection of a City supporter, incensing those who had a good view of the proceedings.

On the final whistle, Beresford took advantage of the same protection being given to the referee and left the pitch to a hail of jeers.

As we left the ground to make our way back to the nearby cricket ground where we had enjoyed a very pleasant pre-match drink, there was trouble as the local police tried to force some City supporters onto the minibuses and coaches that they were not supposed to be on and there was a number of heated discussions.

So yet again, another good City performance fails to bring any reward and now, a victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers is very much needed.

Man Of The Match - Calum Davenport

Mare Of The Match - The referee for his lack of neutrality followed by Dean Gordon who had a total mare.
