Scottish side Motherwell provided the Academy with one of their final pre-season tests on Tuesday afternoon before the new season kicks off on August 24.
The youth team lost 1-0 in the game played at Ryton.
Both side were evenly matched but it was ‘The Steelmen’ who broke the deadlock, scoring on the break.
Playing a restrictive 4-5-1 system, Motherwell proved a difficult side for the young Sky Blues to break down.
Rory May had the best chances of the match, seeing a header being saved by the keeper and a shot going just past the post.
Roy O’Donovan also came close to scoring with a couple of shots but failed to hit the target.
A recent goal-drought for the Under 18s is something that coach George Mackie wants the team to improve on,
“We only had a few goal-scoring opportunities in the match but we failed to capitalise on those chances. We will be working on the side’s shooting.
He added, “It was a good aggressive game which provided the boys with a good workout for the new season.
“Stephen Munn, one of our centre-backs stood out in particular, as did midfielder Isaac Osbourne. Savage, the trialist, in goal also looked comfortable.
“Motherwell were an impressive side and worked hard. They didn’t give us a lot of space but we were able to match them. It was just unfortunate we couldn’t get on the score sheet”.
